Rather strange and interesting story here:

"The plan was simple, but perilous. Some 300 heavily armed volunteers would sneak into Venezuela from the northern tip of South America. Along the way, they would raid military bases in the socialist country and ignite a popular rebellion that would end in President Nicolás Maduro’s arrest.

What could go wrong? As it turns out, pretty much everything.

The ringleader of the plot is now jailed in the U.S. on narcotics charges. Authorities in the U.S. and Colombia are asking questions about the role of his muscular American adviser, a former Green Beret. And dozens of desperate combatants who flocked to secret training camps in Colombia said they have been left to fend for themselves amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The failed attempt to start an uprising collapsed under the collective weight of skimpy planning, feuding among opposition politicians and a poorly trained force that stood little chance of beating the Venezuelan military.

“You’re not going to take out Maduro with 300 hungry, untrained men,” said Ephraim Mattos, a former U.S. Navy SEAL who trained some of the would-be combatants in first aid.

This bizarre, untold story of a call to arms that crashed before it launched is drawn from interviews with more than 30 Maduro opponents and aspiring freedom fighters who were directly involved in or familiar with its planning. Most spoke on condition of anonymity, fearing retaliation."

In some ways, this is oddly reminiscient of "Mad" Mike Hoare's coup attempt in the Seychelles in 1981:

Reminds me of the bank robbery or whatever it was that took place in Haiti with the former SEALS (pretty sure they were SEALS).

Two of them were; one of them was Chris Heben.

Difference is Bay of Pigs "could" have worked if we didn't pull air support.

It's not just Bay of Pigs that comes to mind, but every CIA coup. The failed ones usually sound just like that, and even the more successful ones like Iran 1953 and Guatemala 1954 usually share a lot of those elements.

No doubt they all have a common theme as failures/success in such ventures usually do.

The guy is a clown. Former SF, but still a clown. Having the strength of will to succeed in a high level tactical environment does not necessarily erase flaws in your character.

Kudos to the warrior in him, shame on the clown.

If someone from the CIA is patting you on the back while guiding and supplying you as you do some shady stuff, as soon as the words "I've got you covered, you can depend on us" you better have a firm grasp on the eject lever.

Ed Harris did his first turn as a man in black in a movie sort of based on William Walker.

And what man among us has not ever thought of pulling off a more long term successful version of William Walker?

Reminds me of Bo Gritz. He was a former green beret who ran a conspiracy radio show. According to Eric Haney, a former member of Delta, they received credible evidence of live POWs still held in Vietnam twice during the early 80s. The evidence was substantial enough that they began planning rescue operations, but each time the same information was leaked to Gritz who would then go on the radio and try and form a volunteer rescue operation. As a result, both times Delta cancelled their rescue plans everything was compromised by the efforts of Gritz.

It personally kills me to think that a decade later there were still POWs that got "left behind" so I can understand the frustrations and motivations of Gritz, but one would think being a former member of Special Forces he should have known he was being played or at least known not to broadcast it on the radio.

Unconfirmed but I saw something about these guys using ARs with pistol braces and air soft gear. Anyone else find anything solid on that? If they were rolling in there with pistol braces I have a lot of questions about their decision making...

They probably didn't want to get in trouble carrying around unregistered SBR's, hence the braces.

In Venezuela though? If you're going to overthrow the government I wouldn't really be worried about that. I get slapping one on if you're in the states prepping.

Yes the pics I’ve seen have shown an Airsoft AR and a bunch of detached Shockwave Blade braces. As well as one photo with a guy holding an AR pistol with the brace attached. This seems incredibly weird to me. Obviously a really bizarre choice of gear for a coup. And even if this whole thing were some kind of false flag op by the Maduro government you’d think it would still be easier to just use real AKs or something for the propaganda photos vs going to the trouble to find ridiculous and nonsensical shit like pistol braces.
