STOL planes have fascinated me for decades. It seems that there is a real renaissance in back-country based around Kitfox, Highlander, Carbon Cub and other airplanes. Lots of home built experimental planes so they can be mod'd a lot more easily. The other thing, is that it seems like the horsepower has really climbed. From 80ish horsepower in historic Cub's to these new snowmachine tweaked engines that put out 200+hp. Of course, there is/was DRACO, which was a Wilga tow plain that a mad man put a turbine engine in.

Plus, a lot of these guys like Trent Palmer are drone videographers, so they have killer camera kits and editing skills.

These guys should re-shoot BAT-21 movie.

Want to waste and afternoon, follow Trent Palmer, Mike Patey (the dude doesn't sleep and he is a self taught engineer. amazing), and others.

It seems like the winning formula is a plane, a hottie in the right seat and some go pro's.

Didn't even know such a thing existed. Will be interesting to see how that translates into commercial / military designs.

It's a blessing to live smack dab in the middle of the bush airplane world. I've been fascinated by bush flying my entire life and have had the pleasure of flying with some great back country pilots. I've never wanted to dedicate the money to it myself, but I don't need to with a bunch of well qualified friends with airplanes. I also have some unqualified friends I won't fly with. Anyhow, these are two of my favorite videos. A modified Cub with the right amount of wind doesn't need much land to get going of to land on.

Steve Henry is a first class pilot and just a little crazy... This is the first video I ever watched of him.. Not nearly the quality of his latest vidoes.. still cool as shit.

I took an aviation class in high school and the instructor said that he wants flu “backwards“ down archer Avenue on approach to midway when it was so windy that he was being blown backwards relative to the ground... don’t quite know about that one but it is amazing what they can do with the headwind.

The closest I’ve come to that is using and picnic table in the park like an aircraft carrier to takeoff and land from with my RC planes.

Rearward movement is entirely possible with a strong enough head wind. The wings are getting enough AIR speed to generate lift, whether or not you're generating enough thrust to overcome the head wind is the question.

Just hoping Mike Patey gets Draco rebuilt and back in the air, shame for that airplane to be banged up.
