Doc, have you guys tested Speer Gold Dot .223 64gr yet? Supposedly its a superior barrier round to LE223T3 and is meant to feed better.

I'd like to see how it compares against LE223T3 with regards to both bare gel and windshield ect.

Here's a thread from TOS. It will have to do until the good Doc gets his report done. http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=16&t=399914&page=2 - while most of TOS is a waste, this guy seems to be fairly squared away...

Yeah I read it, seems that it has great accuracy potential but it doesnt say anything on how it performs terminally.

True, but it will give you something to hold you over until Doc gets his report out! Also, I know the load from TOS is the 24448 and I know personally that a large US federal LE agency is using 24450 which I can't find on Speer's site. I wonder if there is a difference between the loadings - the boxes look identical.

Hopefully is a good alternative to the LE223T3 since I've seen it advertised for about 1/3 of the price!

Would be interesting to compare this against Win 64 Power Point and a comparable load featuring Sierra's 65 Gameking.

Yep, have tested it extensively last year before it was out to the public.

Has great performance, thru media. Shows little flight deviance thru auto glass, and holds together real well.

Appears to be a winner.

jmart,

It is not comparable to the Win 64 gr, 64 gr TRU, 65 gr GK or other similar loads that are not ideal against intermediate barriers--it acts more like the Fed Tac 62 gr TBBC or Nosler 60 gr Partition.

Doc,

Gotcha. I didn't expect the others to behave like a bonded core bullet, I was just saying it would be interesting to see how each design behaves in the different medium.

Thanks for link. I think I'll stick with the TBBC load until the testing proves that .223 gold is equal to or better than the TBBC.

Also do you need a dept letterhead or a some form of LEO identification to order from them?

I would be interested in seeing the test considering we are going to the Gold Dot as a duty round.

Doc,

Any new info on the .223 Gold Dots? I'm getting ready for a bulk agency ammunition order and I'm trying to find something duty worthy for typical LE shooting environments that runs for around $0.75-$1.00 a shot.

Have been thru a few of ATK's ballistic seminars, where we can bring any ammo to test, and the Gold Dot out performed anything that anyone brought...including TAP.

We shot thru wallboard, plywood, windshield glass, and many different thicknesses of clothes....and of course bare gelatin.

Check here for some of their results as well.

We have seen the same results at the seminars we have recently attended. We will making the switch to the 64 grn. .223 GD in the very near future.

DocGKR, are you the same one that came up to Wa State a few years ago to our LE Firearms Instructor seminar and put on a ballistic seminar?

Wichaka, I did a seminar for WSLEFIA at the Yakima meeting in July of 2003.

That was the meeting where the Second Chance reps said that I didn't know what I was taking about and that Zylon was the best body armor material in the world...

I remember that....which is why 2nd chance hasn't been back!

Any chance of getting you up here again?

It's not quite as accurate as the .223 version, but that is to be expected.

The 55 grain 5.56 has been out for more than 6 months. It's LE only and in short supply, probably why it's hard to find.

Interesting that the 5.56 is in a nickel case, where your's and my .223 is in a non nickel plated. Maybe it's just early ammo and Speer will be incorporating nickel cases in all of them.

The .308 168 grain is in nickel.

Where are you guys finding .223/5.56 Gold Dot at? I need to swap out the Federal TBBC that I've had in my patrol rifle for awhile and I can't find GD anywhere.

Check the Speer LE site. Their LE sellers have it available to them, but like a lot of duty ammo, it's in short supply and backordered.

Speer says 50 fps. As soon as the weather and my work schedule cooperate, I'll let you know if that is true.
