Anyone have any comments on using Colt 9mm carbines? Very expensive, of course, but are users generally satisfied with them?
Thanks.

I have one .....The ONLY regret I have in owning a 6450 is I wished I purchased it in 1991 like I did my Colt HBAR for $650 (I got it and a 1000 rounds of Norinco for $750 cash out the door !!).

I did casually look at one back then and unknowingly snubbed it ...... I thought "WHY would anyone want THAT!??!" Absolutely love the 9mm AR's. Huge fun. I also bunny hunt w/ mine and play PCC.

I have one. I've only shot it very little but it's run without issue when I have shot it. I think I have a couple hundred rounds through it tops. About half of that was shot suppressed with a YHM can on the end, the other half was initial sight in and function check.

If my new Anvil/RRA 9mm SBR runs as well I'll be selling off the Colt.

Here it is with the can on it.

Those are great looking rifles and I do want to buy a Colt 6450. I noticed your upper looks modified. That hudge Brass deflector is gone and I thought it was part of the upper, meaning you cant move it. Pls explain how you removed yours and the way it is attached originaly.

The upper receiver on Colt 6450 9mm doesn't have a deflector made into it like the
A2 and later 5.56mm uppers do. They have a plastic deflector/shield that
attaches to the port door hinge pin. I think this plastic deflector/shield
looks like a cheap after thought. It is easy to remove by removing the "E"
clip on the front of the port door hinge pin and pulling the pin out. Once
you do this you will also need to replace the short port door with a
standard size door. My gun ejects the brass forward and to the right on
about a 45 degree angle so removing the deflector/shield was not a problem
on mine. The deflector/shield is also supposed to block any gas that blows
out of the port during firing. I have never had any problem with this issue
either.

Like Scattergun I also removed the ugly plastic clam shell on my 6450. I have not been hit with anything since the removal. Cases land Way out @ 3 o'clock. I have not even replaced the door yet. I love the old A1 look.

I have a 6450. i got a good deal and bought it for the lower for my SBR project. I immediately replaced the upper with a larue upper, w a noveske barrel and larue hg (after my stamp came back of course). It is actually my wife's gun, but ammo costs being what they are I'll probably be using it at a few classes this year. It runs like a champ; about 10% of my CProduct mags have issues and will be going back

Well after holding, touching and smelling a colt 6450 in a store today, I had to have one. This rifle is much nicer in person but the price was to high so I went back online to a company where the price was at least 350.00 cheaper and bought it. It might be in my hands by this Friday or next Monday. :D

You wont regret that purchase. I have one and it's a great shooter. Also the perfect rifle to introduce new shooters to EBR's.

I inherited a Law Enforement marked Colt 6450 about a year ago. When I first got it, I thought, "what the heck is the point?" I was resolved to sell it. Well I waited and never got around to selling it for sentimental reasons really.

Then I took it out for a spin on the range. I LOVE IT! I have to say, it is awesome. Super light, suprisingly accurate (remember its a 9MM)

I reload, so my 9mm is SUPER cheap to shoot. Get one, you won't regret it.

I too put my nose up at the 6450 and didnt even consider this rifle a couple years ago. I began looking into them and thought what the heck so I purchased one and its great. My lower is maked Colt Defense with the LEO markings current production and the finish is great.

I only shot from 50 yards but I hit dead center with a grouping the size of a small fist. I was using Magtech 115 gr full metal and had no issues. I shot 100 rounds and now I want to reload for this weapon. :D

I dont know much about reloading anymore but do have a Dillon Square deal I purchased in 1992 set for 40 cal. I need to check if I can switch out dies for the 9MM.

You're likely right. Whatever does or does not happen to us legislatively, it seems clear that demand will remain consistently high from this point forward, and a return to the days of "reasonable" pricing is probably not in the cards. Rather than grouse about that, I guess I should just be grateful that, for now, the window of opportunity is still open at all.

When you say M4 you are meaning a flat top? Look at the link. Parts are hard to come by at this point. Grant has a built up option available now. You will need to find a bolt (RRA) and a mag block (Hann, RRA, Colt). If your lower does not have a 9mm hammer and heavy buffer then you will need that also.

There is a lot of interest right now in the retro forum at Arfcom in 9mm carbines. Nodak spud will be making A1 pattern, 9mm marked lowers soon, and will be offering them along with a true 9mm slickside upper receiver as a package deal - looking like sometime in July/August.

I have everything I need but the lower to build a semi clone of an RO635 - true Colt upper, Colt 2-pc magblocks and extended bolt catch, SS trigger/hammer pins etc. Most people in the know recommend ramping the bolt as unramped bolts put a lot of strss on the trigger/hammer pins, enough to break them.

This will be my first SBR, and I can't wait! I will build it up as a pistol until I get the form one back, but first I need the lower - I have two stripped A2 lowers I could use, but I want it to really look right. Check out the 11 pg thread in the retro forum on Arfcom. The little 9mm carbine may very well become my favorite gun, and should be a perfect HD weapon in my area.

I would start another thread. I have not shot one.
For those whating a .45ACP AR there are a couple of choices in lowers, but limited choices in uppers. Most all the uppers are build from Oly uppers or built on non-Oly upper that have been modified to use the Oly ejector/Bolt system. As to lower the problems is in the fact that the more common .45cal stick mags are too wide for the standard 5.56 mag well. Oly uses a .45 Uzi mag with a welded on mag well filler. This mag setup is very bulky and the mags are expensive. Your other option is the wider .45ACP Grease Gun mags. There are tow options of this a Cav Arms MkII lower or a Bazoka Brothers lower (there has been several others that that threatened to produced a broched lower and have producted limited numbers, but they are not common).

I run a Rock River 9mm that I cut to 10.5 throughout the winter as an indoor trainer. Has about 2000 rounds down the tube without issue providing I feed it brass cases. It will not shoot aluminum cased ammo at all! The key for reliability to me has been in running original COLT mags. The C-Products have not been reliable at all for my rifle.

Of late I have been playing with the 147gr ammo and cans and have to say these are pretty cool and VERY quiet. As mentioned the 9mm is great for starting the kids and ranges that are not rifle rated.

I don’t think I would hesitate to go to work with mine provided I knew for sure all shots would be less than 50 yards.

You may want to check with Steve at ADCO Firearms as he frequently has 9mm uppers, bolts, barrels and mag blocks in stock for 9mm. I just purchased a new barrel and had it cut to 6" so I could use the VTAC rail and YHM can I had on hand to their full extent.

Goto to biggerhammer.net and compare your rifle's SN to the pre-ban list.
You could also call Colt, they should be able to tell you the date of manufacture.
Also, it looks like the rifle is using a screw type pivot pin, suggesting pre-ban.

Picked up my LEO/Govt. marked 6450 late last year, awesome carbine and I am very satisfied.

Traded a Kimber Pro Target even for it and the carbine came with a case and 5 Colt 32 round mags that were still in the wrappers.

Only mods to date are a nice sling, a LMT stock and a tritium front post, nothing else needed here.

I've had my little Colt Sporter 9mm now for almost nine years. SBRed it right off the bat and have never looked back. Great little gun and lots of fun. I had bought it used all those years ago and have probably put 5000 rounds down the pipe. Guy I know wanted a barrel without a bayonet lug (mine was a cut-down Sporter barrel) so I was able to trade straight across into a Colt 635 barrel with less than a thousand rounds down the pipe. Don't think I'd ever want to get rid of the little carbean.

You can't go wrong with a Colt 9mm.

I own two original green label preban Colt R6450s that have a type 1 fiberite collapsing stock, no plastic deflector and a bayonet lug. I bought them NIB in 1985. Later, in 1993 Colt came out with the politically correct blue label R6430 that had an A2 rifle stock, plastic deflector and no bayonet lug. The current Colt AR6450 9mms are blue label LE rifles with the M4 stock, plastic deflector and bayonet lug.

Regardless of which model you get, they are all reliable weapons and a lot of fun to shoot. Converted UZI mags work just as well as factory Colt mags.

I shot an LE colt 9mm subgun. The guys from the agency that owned them said they were great for 10 - 15 years and just recently sent them to colt to be reworked. When they got them back they were still having feed problems - even with new mags. No one could get more than 25/26 rounds into the 32 round mags either. When I went through the colt armorer school they cautioned that if you slam the muzzle with a round in the chamber (and a soft primer), weapon on safe, you can discharge the gun from inertia, since the bolt doesn't lock like the typical .223. They said it happens frequently in power plants when security guards go down a ladder and the muzzle strikes a rung on the ladder.

I picked up a pre-ban model that seems a little odd. I may have found an interesting one, what do you think? S/N is LTA0010XX. According to the "legend of the gun", it had been sitting in a safe at a nuclear plant and only occassionally shot. It took a few loadings to get the mag to take all 32 rounds. The guy I bought it from test-fired it and so did I, dead-nuts accurate at just 10 yards. Now it goes back into the safe.

Found a NIB model at a very good price the other day and I'll shoot that one instead.

Based on the serial number it appears to be a LEO model carbine. They are usually "Noban" carbines made after the AWB expired. Without seeing a closeup of the rollmarks on both sides of the lower receiver, I cannot be sure. However, the barrel markings appear to be from a preban SP1 9mm model. Without better closeup pictures of all the rollmarks it is hard to verify one way or another.

The true preban Colt 9mm serial numbers had a TA prefex.

After searching my Colt Catalogs I believe your Colt 9mm is a AR6430 postban carbine made sometime between 1995 and 2004. Most Colts made during this time frame had the large pin sear block and no flash suppressor or bayonet lug. However, since yours is a LEO model it would have the FS and bayo lug. Since it is roll marked with the LEO marks on the rights side it probably was made later than 1999 but before 2004 when the AWB law expired. I don't have catalogs for those years to verify. Colt has a bad habit of mixing and matching parts from different model years and this makes it very hard to determine exactly when a particular rifle was made. Bottom line: it is definitely not a preban! I hope this helps.

I really appreciate your input!

Any thoughts about the scope on the gun? It seems mismatched as my research shows it's for long range, but somewhat dated. I've seen the scope for sale for as much as $600, but then again, you can find all sorts of rediculous prices for AR equipment these days.

I'm wondering if the whole thing is worth putting away in the safe or not.

On another point, thinking about appropriate optics on a 6450. I liked the 3x20 scope on the other gun, but considering what to put on the incoming 6450. Not sure an ACOG is worth it for a 9mm, but considering the C-More Scout and a couple of other options. Opinions welcome!

In 1985 Colt introduced the R6450 9mm Carbine. (Type 1 collapsing stock, no sear block, flash suppressor, bayonet lug and no brass deflector) Then in 1992 they introduced the R6430 9mm Sporter Lightweight Carbine. (For some unknown reason Colt introduced the model number 6450 before the 6430) The R6430 had a fixed C7 stock (A slightly shortened A2 stock) no bayonet lug, flash suppressor, a small pin sear block and a plastic brass deflector. Since your carbine is a LEO version it has features of both models. To most Colt collectors, the R6450 is the desireable model, but who knows, maybe in another 20 years the LEO versions will be in demand.

The 3X20 scope is an early model Colt scope that has some collector value. Last time I looked they were selling in the $250 to $350 range (new condition with original box, leather lens covers and paperwork). The 4X20 is selling for more than that.

In my opinion the iron sights are best for the 9mm considering its short range capability. If you prefer optics, use a red dot.

I purchased a new AR6450, a few days ago. After doing some online research, I learned that a ramped bolt carrier and stainless-steel trigger/hammer assembly pins were once common upgrades for this rifle. I am pleased to report that Colt now icorporates these features into the new rifles.
