View Full Version : Replacing Noveske Gen 1 10.5 inch Basic Shorty Handguard: Any cool ideas?
I ordered the Magpul MOE SL hand guards.
I'll be carefully removing the sling adapter.
What size hand guards can I choose from besides the MOE SL?
Of course Noveske would be my first choice - but what size?
How hard is it to replace the hand guards?
Putting on the MOE SL is easy but I'm thinking the other aluminum ones would not be easy.
This is what the upper looks like:

this caught my eye years ago but didn’t order: phase5 LO-PRO SLOPE NOSE (LPSN7.5) FREE FLOAT QUAD RAIL.
don’t know it it’s what you’re looking for but i thought it had some coolness. i’ve been wrong before so...

Does Noveske make a rail that would fit on this length?
It does not look like it.
Keep in mind it already has a front site post.
Also, will it be easy enough to remove whatever needs to come off to add a rail?
I have an AR wrench.
I don't want to open a can of worms so I might just keep the Magpul hand guard.
What I would want for that gun:

Or
https://www.centurionarms.com/c4-mlok-rail-carbine-cut-p/0819cc.htm
The 12” front sight pocket models might also work with the flaming pig, but I don’t know that, nor am I sure I’d be into it. Just throwing it out there.
Good possibilities so far.
The operative words are "carbine length cutout" or "carbine cut".
The rail has to work around the front site post.
Edit:
I might have to cancel my plans...
In order to put on such a hand guard - I would have to remove the "hand guard slip ring".
I think that entails removing the barrel.
That is beyond my level of expertise!

Looks like I'll keep it simple with the Magpul MOE SL.
It might be tough to pull down the hand guard slip ring but I saw a few videos and have the proper tools.
The MOE just snaps in at that point.

You don’t have to pull the barrel, but it does make it easier. However, I will not argue with the MOE SL. Its a good choice; probably just as good as the Centurion I mentioned for most reasonable uses.

He doesn't want to remove the barrel.
Here are a few pictures of carbine handguards which do not require removal of the barrel, and are pretty simple to install.

I don't think I'll be removing the barrel but if I were to - this was a good video:

I recommend a Daniel Defense Omega rail. It doesn't require any changes to the upper receiver other than removing the stock handguards.

You can also get a KAC RAS... it's tried and true, and been used by the US military for more than 15 years. The biggest difference is that it doesn't free-float the barrel like the DD rail and doesn't include sling attachment points. But, like the DD rail, it doesn't require modification to the weapon beyond removing the stock handguards.

Install the MagPul Slimline handguards and shoot the snot out of your AR. Slimlines are very cool, do a good job of protecting your hands when the AR heats up and are rugged. I've been using Slimline handguards since they came out and really like them. I don't think the Slimlines give anything up to free float handguards on short barreled ARs. You won't be out anything for trying them first.

I might want to use the KAC RAS on a future build if I get another Basic Shorty.
I didn't realize it was drop in and that the rail covers were optional.

These make me kind of miss my RAS II setup. Very solid rails, and easy to install.
Anybody make a handguard that floats a 20" w/ A frame FSB ?
I can't find any.

They really are a pretty slick setup. People just had a hard time with the hump, even though most of those people aren't installing anything which would interfere.... but I digress.

Not that I'm aware of, any demand for it would be very, very small.

These two should fit a rifle length gas system with A-frame FSB. Both need to have the delta ring assembly removed prior to installation.
