A 14.5 with a surefire mini 2 vs a 11.5 with a surefire rc2. Difference in length is only 1.8 inches. Which do you all prefer?

It depends on your intended use. “Mission dictates gear”, and all that.

If you need a can, 11.5 with RC or MINI > 14.5 with any can IMO. 14.5 with a can is just too long for me.

I prefer short and light. I think 12.5 with mini can is the sweet spot for 5.56.

Of the 2, 14.5 with Mini.

I hate cans on ARs, but the Mini cans are, at least, a little less heavy and gassy.

11.5 or 12.5 with mini can.

I havent compared them(11.5 vs 12.5), but the 11.5” is noticeably louder Than the 14.5 w/mini, but quiet enough for practical use. Its like an unsilenced .22. Gas port is a huge factor with at-ear noise.

Unless there is some positional tactical thing going on, or a “nice and quiet” thing, i find fullsize cans difficult to justify from a purely practical standpoint.

Tldr: go with as short as possible for general use. No pistol/nfa: 14.5 w/mini. Anything else: 11.5 or longer with mini.

My favorite is the 12.5 with mini

Have both set ups with the exact cans you mention.

11.5” is a Colt HRT barrel.
14.5” is a Larue stealth barrel.

The 14.5” with the mini sounds quieter to the ear and feels lighter.

My wife watching me shoot both says the 11.5” with the full size sounds quieter.

If I could only have one it would be the 14.5 and mini. I’ve come to the opinion short guns like the 11.5 are handiest with out a silencer, and adding the silencer kind of defeats the purpose of the short light gun.

Its user preference, of these two choices I would ask myself, is this going going to be used for more indoor stuff or outdoor stuff. With Law folders and some some pretty good QD Cans out there, I would lean more towards a 14.5 as I don't foresee many situations where I am shooting a 556 out of a Car.

I have a Sandman K that will eventually spend time on a 10.5 and 14.5 MRP.

Do you plan on shooting it without the can?

10.3” Centurion with a mini can.

I know DocSherm is a slut for 12.5” guns, but we really couldn’t tell a difference between a 10.3” with a Mini4 vs full size can. I think Nightchief and RobertTheTexan would also agree.

It’s so light and small. :)

Short is good. I genuinely disdain breathing GSR though. So hard to hush the 5.56. That crack is tough to get rid of without degrading to subsonic and then wouldn't 22 be adequate?

It was hard to tell the difference. And there was almost no difference with my 12.5 with the same Mini4 next to you.

I like the 11.5 with full size...and it breathes fire like a dragon!

In all seriousness, I’d prefer to run something like a Sandman K to reduce the weight on the nose and make it easier to maneuver.

I strongly prefer a full size can on a SBR. It may be the powders I use but the mini cans breathe fire like a dragon in low light whereas flash is small like a match stick with a full size can. I can also tell the difference in noise pretty easily.

That depends on a lot. The can. Ammo used.

Nightchief’s gun was longer than mine and had a full size Surefire can and had that kind of flash.

I had no such thing with the same ammo shooting right next to him.

I prefer mini suppressors on 5.56 rifles, but still use my AAC 762-SDN6 on my 14.5" Noveske AR-15 simply because I've used it on that rifle forever. I've also shot it with my Saker-K but that usually lives on my 11.5" SBR.

And lets be honest, while 5.56 is hard to suppress - odds are you'll have electronic ear pro on while shooting them for a number of reasons (comms, better hearing acuity while hunting, poors nearby shooting without suppressors, etc) - so to me the biggest thing is overall weight / feel of the combo and no gas to the face.

I had the same dilemma so I just went ahead and purchased both the Mini and RC2. Gonna put the Mini on my 11.5 to keep it short. If it’s unbearably loud than I’ll swap it out. It’s a duty gun and I want to keep it short. Cans are still locked up awaiting tax stamp though. I also have a 14.5 and 11.5. My vote is to just get both.

I’m working on a 4 and 5” mini cans at the moment. Dead air mounts etc. so kinda like a sandman k but a little smaller. Figure the 4” should come out around 10oz so I have pretty high hopes for them on 14.5s.

Which cans are you referring to?

I went with a 14.5 with a mini. I know I can shave off a little length and weight going SBR and full can but I wanted a “do all setup”. I figure I’ll slap a 1x6 and be good to go.

Form 1s. There’s enough bougie parts out on the market that you can put together some pretty decent stuff.
