I'm looking to replace the upper on my Springfield champion. It came with the bull barrel. Is there a difference in the slide of standard barrel 1911 and a bull barrel 1911? Also looking for a good source for 1911 slides.

thanks

Brad

Seems like simple questions but there are allot of variables to both.

The slides are the same. I believe Springfield use a proprietary reverse plug for their bull barrel slides and as a result their slide dust cover's rear edge may be different.

If you are building a new complete slide and barrel assembly you need to buy a new recoil spring plug (reverse plug for bull barrel, bushing barrel with full length guide rod, or GI). The full length guide rods usually come with the appropriate plugs.

The cost of doing it right, with the best parts, will be very expensive compared to the price of the gun. It could cost up to $700 after sights and finish.

Have a gunsmith to do the fitting work. You can send it back to the Springfield Custom Shop and they will do anything you want. The prices are o.k., their work is good, and it will be done by the factory.

Brownells is a great source for parts. They have most major brands of slide manufacturers and show if the items are in stock.

Midway has a good site as well.

Shooters connection can be a good place to find parts if you have a good idea of what manufacturer you want.

Feel free to contact me if you have any further questions. There are a myriad of options and one decision affects 3 others.

Eric,

Thanks for the info.

Do you think it would be cheaper to have a gun smith Dehorn the slide, add Cocking serrations to the front of the slide, lower and taper ejection port, and the front sight is just a blade sight (I hope my terminology is right) and I want to replace the sights so that will require cutting it in also.

Edit: Checked links and have my answer. Thanks again Eric

It would likely be much cheaper to modify your existing slide.

the spingfield link I sent has a pdf file link that lets you know the cost breakdown of most of their services.

There are plenty of good gunsmiths around the country that would do a great job. Just ask around to make sure they are legit. Ask the people at local ranges and gun shops. You can also ask the gunsmith to send you pictures and references of his work.

Sticking with nationally recognized gunsmiths is a safe bet. You may have to wait longer but you might end up happier.
