IN THIS ARTICLE (http://www.armytimes.com/news/2008/11/army_carbineday_112308w/) about the Army's search for a replacement for the M-4, they have a contender listed as the: "BUSHMASTER/REMINGTON ADAPTIVE COMBAT RIFLE". Is this accurate? Has this been common knowledge?

Possibly. Cerberus Capital Management, L.P. owns them both, along with DPMS.

I suspect that this is effectively just an ownership issue, as it seems unlikely that Bushmaster would be viewed as having the production capacity or corporate presence to be taken seriously for a potential high-volume military contract without the aid of a venture partner (or sister company).

That's not meant as an affront, but the ACR is one of the few real quantum leaps forward in this field, and as such it is likely to generate serious interest. The rest strike me largely as variations on an existing theme: interesting upgrades, but not next-generation weapon systems in the procurement and fielding sense.

It may also be a case of name dropping. Remington is a much bigger name than Bushmaster in the world of firearms. Some have speculated that Bushmaster doesn't stand a chance of pulling down this contract. However, with a name like Remington on the project perhaps they throw some more weight around.

No possibly, they do. You are correct. Cerberus is making money with the firearms co.'s right now and losing big in their automotive investments.
