I see the "11% FET" pop up here and there. Can anyone explain to me what this is all about?

Thanks.

Federal excise tax on firearms. the tax on complete long rifles is 11%. With an AR, you can get away with not paying it by purchasing the upper and lower complete assemblies on different days. At least that's how I did it with my LMT rifle.

The "ouch" is that Obama's people would like the excise tax raised 500%. It is figured in the price at the manufacturer. Basically a 1000 rifle will cost over 1500

There is also a FET of 11% on AMMO -- which the Left wants raised 1000% so a 20 buck box of ammo would cost around 42 dollars.

So does this mean that if I buy, say the MRP CQB Piston model for $1995 that an additional 11% is tacked on? Or, are you saying that the 11% is already factored into the cost and I'll just pay the $1995?

the way i read it, the tax is figured in at the factory,,

The FET tax is, from what I understand, part of the Pitman-Robinson Act in which help funds USFWS and such, it has a sister that hits the fishing industry (Wallop-Breaux). The tax is already factored into the price of the item your paying.

Some people hate paying the tax, but since I also do a lot of hunting and fishing I see it as a great way for my particular dollars to be spent. If it went into the General fund then I would avoid it like the plague when I can.

Ughhh, my libertarian nerves burn at the thought of 1000% and 500% tax increases.
