View Full Version : Painting CJ7, what color?

I'm doing a frame off on a CJ7, 304 v8, flat fender and armored. Will be used for trails in woods, plowing snow, running mud. I'm struggling with what color to paint it, ideas? I want a semi gloss or flat. My daughter said gray camouflage, not doing camouflage, but gray is good.
Don't want navy gray, looks like primer.
Wrong vintage jeep for OD.
I saw Marine (woodland?) Green, looked good (I was in the Marines, so...)
Friend says Forest Green.
I found a Duracoat "German olive gray" that looked good.

Ideas?

Something around FDE or some sort of tan? Hides dirt and mud.

FDE seems a little over done. Maybe. IDK, I'll think about that. Is there a darker "mud" color? Ideas on that?

I’m sure a mud brown could be mixed up.

I used this paint when I painted by CUCV. It's single stage and easy to shoot.

I like both of those. Thoughts?

Dark forest green looks good. Buddy has one this color with a wide black vinyl stripe on hood.

I think something that would make it stand out would be a 1970’s Ford FE engine block dark blue color. Think that would be neat. Not the powder light blue, but the darker blue.

Do it up like a Kubelwagen

Jeeps are piss poor investments and moneypits especially under Fiat but if I were rich that’s what I’d do.

THIS is my ultimate redpill though

At this point in time, paint it whatever the background is.

Naaaah, go the other way.
That Bass Boat, Root Beer Brown with Gold Metal flake and a big ol' Gold Eagle Globe and Anchor on the hood.
We're headed toward the Apocalypse, "F" it have fun.

Aervoe Field Drab. It's a dark tan / medium brown mud color. Search on it, people have painted 4x4s with it so you can get some idea. It's ugly and basically the color of cardboard.

If you want to generate painful love/hate reactions, try Aervoe Earth Yellow.

I like the "tank green" one..

I like that slate/green color you posted a sample of.

Are you planning on using NON-automotive paint? I am suspecting since I saw Ace hardware, or maybe you just showed that for color sample?

Automotive or something similar in toughness. Just trying to identify the color now.

Thx for all the suggested links, I have some research to do!

I have an 86 CJ-7 Renegade (hence screenname) and I would go with the factory original colors and decals.

Um, nope. Nothing on this thing is factory. The Jonny Cash song is a better description for it. I want a woods jeep, something to slide along a tree as I squeeze through the trail. Narrow front flat fenders, no rear fenders (only armor), old 5 spoke alum rims, and fill length tube steps. No stock paint color.

Leave it primer then. You seem to be saying no to every suggestion made.

Something with Krylon. Makes for easier touch up after a weekend out.

Sand blasting in a week or so, excited to get this done and drive it! I added 4.1 gears and a locker at the back, should be fun. Got a 100 acres of woods up north to run on, friend down the road has another 250.

looks great! That color fits it perfect.
I did my frame with fleet farm tractor/implement black so it'd be easy to touch up. I'll save the paint code for annual touch up on the armor.

Funny with me it felt SAS. But I guess add a couple Pith helmets and some palm tree AK insignia and we are there.

That stuff just adds a lot more to weight quickly.

When it’s time to frame off my 04 2500 I’m probably gonna go with the USMC coyote brown or OD green.

Yeah why not primer brown. You could easily touch up any rock scrapes to the metal and the red clay stains would blend right in. David

Don’t know where you could have some automotive mixed for you, but I’m painting a couple rooms in my house with Behr “Adirondack Blue.” It’s an amazing color, a faded denim blue but more steel / silver gray. Really sharp looking. Home Depot has the swatch for it if someone makes custom mixed auto paint

Most all auto paint is custom mixed, you give them the paint code on the cars build sticker and they mix it, they can also scan a color and mix it.

Another color I’m digging these days is the charcoal grey color. I saw it first on a Taco and have since seen it on F-150s and Silverados. I like it cause it seems subdued/tactical without being OD green or FDE.

Is that on new, 2020, vehicles? I'd like to find the colors.

I would do WW2 uniform German Green/Gray....it kind of blends into different surroundings and is good all year round. The color is a little more green

I build model tanks, figures and aircraft and I am amazed how that color seems to blend in.

For durability I would Rhinoline or Line-X it...

Meh, I thought I liked that color a lot. Wife was about to get a RAV4 in that color, but in most lighting conditions it looks like sage green. Pretty ugly. Guys that like ACU would be into it.

I think Toyota has had it on the market for a few years. For the others I think it’s new.

Bed lining an entire vehicle adds a lot of weight. Just something to be cognizant of.

Yea, for a RAV4, no, but I could see a woods Jeep in it.
