View Full Version : Laminated gunstocks
No argument that they're heavier than traditional wood stocks and not as weather resistant as synthetic stocks, but I've always been a sucker for the way they look. I think that most World War II K98k Mausers had this type of stock too.
Looking back, how well has this type of stock held up over time?

Ask a 1950s vintage Russian SKS.
Most are in pretty impressive shape.

They are as good as the sawmill that laminates the lumber.
The German 98’s switched from red to a white glue laminate late in the war, and most of those are no bueno to shoot anymore.

Don't most AKMs built before the 1980s have laminated wood for the buttstock and handguards? Seems durable.
The laminate used on US and western European guns is made with a modern plastic resin glue and the bond shouldn't fail. The factory finishes are generally very water resistant.

I like laminate stocks because they look good and are stiff.
Recent(albeit limited) adoption with laminate stock.

Likely. From what I have read the lightening cut in the sides of the butt became something of a trademark and got carried over to polymer butts including side folders even though weight wasn't an issue.
