View Full Version : What ARE you spending your time/money on now?

With the dearth and now stupid prices related to all things guns, many people are doing "other things". Some are accessorizing their guns, some are buying body armor and even night vision stuff. It's hunting season of course and I know lots of guys are now spending more time in the field.....I've done all that and continue to hunt quite a bit.....

Recently I realized that I had Eleven chainsaws....half (?) of which actually ran like they were supposed to! So, I hopped on Ebay, ordered some parts, spent a few nights in the shop tearing apart carbs and putting in new fuel lines, checking spark plugs. Got all of them but 1 running pretty well and then sold most of them on Facebook Marketplace. I have bought 3 new ones to replace what I sold along with lots of spare chains, files, spark plugs, filters etc...I was able to really cut down on the spare parts I need to keep around by consolidating on fewer models etc....

Probably something I needed to do long ago but with a bit of spare time I was able to address it.

I also ordered a 3d Printer. Going to try my hand at making a few little things. First project will be some bright orange Glock mag baseplates for my practice mags...It's something I've thought about for a long time....

Anyone else working on "other things" for awhile? I still get to the range for weekly practice, shoot mostly .22 stand in trainers...but not spending nearly as much on ammo etc...as I was.

NICE TRY, FBI!

But seriously, YOU’RE NOT MY REF, ATF!

Okay really though, I save my money like an actual adult. This isn’t Barfcom where guys consoom some new bullshit or buy a new heckin OLED Widescreenerino.

As for my hobbies they remain unchanged: Stoli, Dirty Chinese Cartoons, Trannies, listening to records, upgrading my Thinkpads, sitting pensively by the lake and sipping frozen coffee while listening to Erasure,

I shot my first Antelope this year. I only had two days to hunt, I passed him up early in the hunt but decided, "Meh, first one, he looks decent"...put a good stalk on him, done.

Imagine my surprise when I took him to my processor/taxidermist. He says, "You want to book him?" and I'm like "Well, yea sure, I mean I want to be legal"- Antelope here in Texas are kinda funny, some areas you have to present them so Warden can take a tooth to age etc so I'm thinking he has to "book it in" with copy of license etc case he gets checked by the Wardens.......Taxidermist laughs at me and says, "Uh, no, that's a GOOD goat, I'm an official B&C scorer and I can tell you right now, he'll make book"....Laughed even harder when I told him I had passed him up at first....What do I know about hunting Antelope?

I’ve been expanding my home gym, been buying stuff as it comes back in stock. Recently I’ve added more rubber floor tiles, some change plates so I can continue my linear progression, a Spudd Inc cable pulley system for Lat pull downs, a weighted dip belt for chin ups and pull ups, and some new lifting straps, hard to maintain grip on the bar during deadlifts with short stubby fingers

Before we sent my 18 year old off to college my wife enrolled the two of us in some cooking classes- just a few hours in an evening with each class having a different theme. Classes were taught by a local "TV Chef"--good guy.

He would talk for a couple of hours about the considerations for the particular dish and then we would prepare the ingredients as a class and then cook it and eat it. It was really a lot of fun- $25 for the class and you got a meal out of it and got to meet some folks.... Great bonding time with my kiddo. Anyway, one of the classes was on grilling and I learned a shit ton about preparing steaks and the different cuts etc...

I've been building tube amps, been studying and working on it all year, since about March. Something I've always wanted to do. Been into guitar playing and amps for the last 20 years, but really have learned a lot more this year than I ever thought was possible. It's fun because classic amps like Fender Tweeds and Marshall Plexis are so expensive and rare now that they're basically unobtainum, and even if you aquired one, if it still has original components, they're likely to be out of spec, and you'd be afraid to rag it out because you might blow an original speaker or something. But I can build a replica of any of those classic circuits and even modify them to alter the tone or the power, dime it out and if I blow a speaker, who cares? Recently I built a 5F6A Bassman/MarshalI Plexi circuit, but modified it to be cathode biased and scaled down the power to use 6V6 tubes, it's been fun and educational. Previous to all that, I took a 3 month solo travel to different parts of the world, it was pretty life changing and I'm glad that I did it before Covid hit. Been a pretty amazing year really.

My main reason is to get away from the printed circuit boards of the modern amps. My hot rod deluxe is great, but apparently the boards burn up and repairs are a pain.

That's a pig...congrats. There is a yearly epic thread on our hunting forum called FART / Famous Antelope Road Trip where a group of members head out to NM where they do a live hunt & post up their goats. It's on the bucket list but I spend a lot of coin on the 7000 acre ranch / lease & becomes hard to justify.

Nice!

Actually a 723 though. The 727 used an A2 style upper.

I went through a bit of a Retro clone kick myself, particularly the 700 series guns as I grew up in the 80s and 90s.
This past year though with tensions building I started shifting my attention back to more “practical” ARs.
nothing saying a Retro can’t be practical too though I frequently shoot mine...or I did before the ammo situation went nuts, and often still grab a Retro carbine to ride along in my vehicle with me.

Yeah, it was a typo. Just corrected it. It is a 723 clone. I just did a 727 as my last build as well, also using all Colt parts, with an A2 upper (Colt-Martin Marietta) and Govt. Carbine lower. The fun part was rounding up nice two-position extensions and N1 stocks. Been collecting odds and ends of Colt parts over the years. Finally have enough for complete weapons.

OH58, you lose cred for having mismatched upper and lower colors. Just kidding. Love the rifle. Nice work. I love seeing people building things, trying 3D printing, making amps, picking up guitars.
I’ve been catching up on the landscaping. Got a smaller tractor and thinking about turning an acre into a hobby farm with sweet corn and pumpkins for next year. I also (though this was pre-COVID) started flying lessons and just soloed last week. That’s my favorite and my mental release now. Looking forward to family trips and an instrument rating.

Most of my clones used few to no actual Colt parts so you’ve got me beat in that regard. I’d really like to get a Colt Gov’t carbine lower and SBR it though at some point to pair with the actual 733 upper I have.

I have a Colt 6933 SBR so I have really no need to go retro in that respect. Over the past few years, Colt Govt Carbine lowers have been readily available, if you were willing to pay the price.

I picked up a rare by 4Runner standards 1990 2door this year. I’ve been working on it and having fun with it. Besides the usual tune ups I’ve had to learn how to do the Valve covers, rear cam seals and timing belt/water pump. All things I’ve never done before. Now I’m learning body work to fix some rust issues. It’s been a nice break from everything.

I’ve got a non-Colt 733 clone SBR as a shooter because I’m obsessed with the Heat bank robbery shootout scene, but yeah, I may have to pony up (har har) the cash for a Colt lower sooner rather than later.

For a large portion of my 22 years in the Army, nearly every weapon I carried had mismatched uppers and lowers. That includes M16A1's, XM177E2 and M4's. That C7 upper is an arsenal refinish with that black epoxy/paint. I wasn't worried about it because it's a tough finish.

My 723 clone isn't based on me wanting to do a "Blackhawk Down" type of weapon, which everyone seems to want to copy. Those of us in the 160th were issued H&K MP5's prior to deployment to Somalia, in addition to the Beretta M9 I carried in a leg holster. The 723 and 727 I have built are just fun little carbines, simple and clean.

For the pilots of the 160th, it was the MP5. Mine was stored in a plastic bag strapped to the back of my seat, with four 30 round mags. I wasn't carrying operators on outboard benches. I flew the armed AH-6J with two hydra 70 pods and one M134 on the co-pilot side (left).

Picked up traditional archery in the plans of doing some hunting and target shooting. Had no idea there was so much science involved in arrow selection. Very relaxing just flinging arrows in the back yard.
Had the thought to try getting into that years back. After several attempts at nearly succeeding in killing myself, I realized I am a Modern Man, wielder of steel, brass and villainous saltpetre, and bows are best left to medieval times...
Although I quite enjoy the topic of realistic historical archery and watching other people NOT shoot themselves on youtube.

As far as doings in these miserable times of ammo scarcity... thanks to ongoing health BS I have been watching a LOT of youtube. I used to be a big watcher of History/Science channel 'back in the day' and there are a ton of channels on YT that equal or better them. It's great. Until the power/internet takes a hiccup because God hates you.
After that, I'm like 96% happy with where I am at with guns. Pretty much just have one major buy left, and a bunch of support gear. Have been spending a lot of time thinking and re-consolidating my morass of extra equipment (shameless plug to buy my stuff in the EE).

Time: Nothing different - just work and spending time with the wife and son. We do indoor rock climbing 4x a week, so that's pretty much what we do with our spare time.
Money: Haven't bought anything gun-related in a while. I have a good stash of ammo for shooting or whatever else, and haven't really seen any new guns that I'd want beyond what I already have. So, I haven't been spending much money on anything hobby-related. However, I've just been contributing a bit here and there to my 'new car fund', which has been wife-approved.

Circle_10
11-04-20, 10:01
I’ve been dumping money into gun stuff still - ammo, spare parts etc. The main reason why I didn’t have the ammo reserves that I should have was that over the past three years I started shooting a lot more and I burned my ammo at the range faster than I could afford to replace it to the degree that I would have liked.
I still like guns a lot, but the constant legislative scares, panic buying, and my own obsessive compulsive approach to shooting that totally sucks the fun out of most range trips by turning them into monotonous clinical affairs where I hyper analyze the placement of every shot has made it a joyless hobby for me. It’s my main interest and it doesn’t even really make me happy.

I used to draw and write a lot but my drive to be creative has become rather like the horse in the Neverending Story that was swallowed up in that swamp. I’m incapable of relaxing because there’s always some problem I need to fix, always “something” that prevents me from ever being at ease.

I need to find something I can care about or enjoy that will take me farther away from the real world, vs obsessing over politics or what bad new laws are coming. Maybe I’ll start spending more time out in the woods and try to befriend the birds and the coyotes. Maybe I could immerse myself in cryptozoology again. There’s a nice, innocuous interest that will leave one benignly chasing one’s own tail with nothing to show for it - because it’s the search that matters.

At least Firefly’s posts still make me chuckle sometimes.

Maybe I'll get back into that since guns will soon be outlaws. :-p There is a nice 1/4 track about an hour from here, hoping once Biden miraculously cured COVID they will have test-n-tune again.

You know Firefly, I always wanted to share a beer with you but this tranny thing lately has got me second guessing that... I do love me some Stoli tho. Shit.

I was looking at moving out into the country more. We live in the middle of a corn field currently but my third of an acre is starting to feel small with 2 boys, a full garden and a shed. We found out yesterday that we lost a bid on a house with 3 acres. It got into a bidding war and we weren't really looking to throw more money at the house then the next person, especially when there are little things that we wanted fixed or redone.

Nah, I prefer to shotgun cans of Bang in front of my Captain.

Wife always has house projects for me. I replaced about 1500sf of carpet with wood floors this year going room by room and I still have one more room and the stairs. I’m doing similar. Replaced all the flooring in my MIL new house, about 1000sqft. Then changed several outdoor lights for her and throwing away a bunch of her junk. Then spent several days in my shop throwing out unused stuff from my old RC hobby, donating tons of stuff to habitat for humanity and amvets. Then on to same mode in garage to toss out unused stuff, donate things like kids helmets, kids dirt bike gear, other things to amvets. Get that garage ready for winter, removed and painted kitchen window. Now put all outdoor furniture away.
No gun or ammo purchases cause prices are stupid. I can wait. I’ll reload some more.

Ham radio gear...yeah I’m a nerd. I have a fascination with tiny electronic devices and antennas that I can build. Run the radio off a 9v battery and talk all over the world. Getting faster at Morse code...I still have a stock of parts to build more guns. After reading all y’alls post I need to open the guitar case and start playing again...spending lots of time working with the kids in Scouts. Backpacking etc...I have a ton of stuff that I like to do.

For the most part I had quit playing guitar ten years or so because I felt I hit a wall and I wanted to really focus on my gun collection. I sold most of my guitars but kept two. For Father's Day this year my wife and son bought me a Chlorine Burst Charvel Pro Mod. Boom right back into guitar and honestly playing better than I did all those years ago. Fast forward to today and I'm back up to eight guitars...

Love the guitars. I have a Gibson SG with two EMG humbuckers, a Seagull acoustic/electric and I think I still have one of those guitars from Washburn that Dimebag Darrell used to play, the tremolo got all jacked up and won't stay assembled so I may have tossed it, or it's buried in my garage. I used to have a B.C. Rich NJ Virgin and a Gibson backpacker but I got rid of them years ago. I really don't play anymore, just don't have the time, but a few years ago when I was in Manilla visiting my wife's family I came across some ESP guitars in a store and rocked out on one for a little bit. I would love to own one, someday perhaps.

You really want to tinker with guitars, assemble one from warmoth parts. I built 2 from their parts since I was a poor college kid at the time. Made a flying V with one of the strongest raunchiest humbuckers I could find and a paul reed smith copy with carved quilted maple body and alcohol stained sunburst. 2 humbuckers wired so that I could turn them into singles and make just about any sounding guitar I wanted to. Not really that difficult to do.

The Jolly Roger was a Charvel Model 2 mutt that I sent off and had painted and then put a Musikraft neck on to make it a strat head. The only thing that's left on it that was original is the body and the tuners. I'd love to do a Warmoth, KNE or Musikraft build and spec it out to my liking. I played around one night a few months ago on Warmoth's website and spec'd a body and neck out with a black metallic flake finish on the body. It was well over a grand for just the body and neck. :)

My father in law has built a couple of guitars down to making the neck and fretting them etc... which would be way more work than I would want to do. One of these days I would like to one together though. I look at the kits on Stew Mac from time to time too.

This 100%. Very rewarding. About 15 years ago I put together a Warmoth Strat. Actually I don't know who made the body but it was a 1 piece swamp ash, Warmoth neck with a Brazilian rosewood fretboard (good luck finding that now) but modern features like a compound radius and truss rod adjustment on the side of the neck near the neck pocket. Put a Callaham bridge on it and installed Lollar pickups. Neck and body were both finished in nitrocellulose. It's been my number one electric guitar ever since and blows the Am. Std. Strat I used to have completely out of the water.

Yeah I did mine probably 20 years ago so I am sure the prices have risen accordingly.

I spent a lot of time fishing this spring and summer. I got my kids into it (particularly my daughter), and I got into fly fishing. That necessitated new gear. I got an entry-level rod from a friend, but I’m looking to upgrade.

Trout season is closed, so now it’s bowhunting. Work is winding down, so after next week, I am off over Thanksgiving and gun-deer. With luck, this Christmas, I will be able to throw down some game dishes.

I also haven’t been to BJJ since March, so that also sucks. I’m working out and doing drills with a select few people.

Truth be told, I’m not nearly as into gun culture and shooting as I used to be. There’s not a whole lot I need or want. My .22 gets the most action nowadays.
