Nothing personal towards the friends I have down there :p

I wonder who they voted for (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20061110/us_nm/life_stamp_dc)?

Actually... it is kind of a sad, but pretty strange none the less.

This is about what you'd expect from someone who can't even fill out an absentee ballot correctly. Stupid is as stupid does. God gave us our brains to use.

The problem with Florida isn't the Floridians, it's that we've become the repository for all the people from other states who's warranty has expired. What's even worse is when they're idiot children follow them down to "be close to" the old farts.

Notice that you never hear about problems like this from Ocala, or Lakeland, or Tallahassee, or Live Oak, or Lake City, etc.

I hear you... I can kind of relate, having spent some time in Phx.

As I said, it is kind of sad really... there is every chance in the world that the person could have been a respected hero at one time; a decorated soldier, veteran cop, firefighter, teacher -- who knows, but as you imply, it is highly likely that they have succumbed to the years and that is truely a sad thing to see.

If God has chosen you to shepherd, then you get out there and shepherd; it is not up to you to decide who is worthy of your attention, and when you are judged, you will be found no better than the worst of the ones you allowed to stray.

There comes a time when you must identify those that have turned, and they must be eliminated with decisive and swift action -- but the only reason you are smarter or stronger, is because there are dumber and weaker. The moment that you believe that you are better than even the lowest of those who try, then you have strayed... and I will be right there behind you, to cut you from the fold.

My girlfriend lives in West Boca Raton. There's a place out here that's a huge wharehouse for the waiting-to-die crowd. It's these giant 1984-esque 4 story apartment buildings where people from all over the country send their old folks to die. It's freakin' creepy as hell to me. It's called "Century Village". This (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=yamato+rd.+%26+lyons+rd.+boca+raton&ie=UTF8&z=16&ll=26.387237,-80.178502&spn=0.013744,0.026951&t=h&om=1&iwloc=addr) is a link to the google satelite image of the place. If you zoom in and out you really start to get a feel for the size of the property and just how many units there are in there. All of the semi-circle shaped white buildings are 4-5 stories tall .

Unfortunately most of these people are also completely intolerable to be around. I don't know if it's because their families "threw them away" or what, but almost without fail they are obnoxious, ridiculously demanding, drive like complete crap, and just generally seem to think that the entire world owes them something for being old. The women also way outnumber the men, I would guess 3:1 (so you'd think that at least the old men would be happy, what with the ratio and the advent if viagra).

...because their families "threw them away"...

I guess that about sums it up...

Rob, you might take a moment to consider what demographic group you will be a member of in 40 to 50 years. :p

The great part about that is I will have learned from watching these people. I don't know if they're miserable because their families don't want them, or if they're families don't want them because they're miserable, but either way being a miserable old fart is a great way to be a lonely old fart.

Maybe they were miserable when younger as well?---------

I wouldn't judge them as a whole, only the ones you may know on a personal level, even then what's the baseline?

Rob S, you are talking about LA (Lower Alabama) - one of my best friends is from there. My wife's grandma is one of whom you speak. She has been an insufferable harpy to her whole life and my wife's uber-dysfunctional family have been nasty right back. My wife is the only one that can have a normal conversation with her, mainly by wearing her down with kindness over several decades.

This thread reminds me of an episode of "The Shield" where the two detectives find an old blind man tied to a post being attacked by stray dogs. They arrest his son and call everyone trying to get a family member and are reviled at every turn. At the end of the show, Dutch asks him why his family hates him and the old blind man says "I was a mean son of a bitch."
