St. Louis City Leader Says Police Ineffective, Tells Residents to Get Armed

Tuesday, December 02, 2008

ST. LOUIS — A St. Louis city leader frustrated with the police response to rising crime called Tuesday on residents to arm themselves to protect their lives and property.

Alderman Charles Quincy Troupe said police are ineffective, outnumbered or don't care about the increase in crime in his north St. Louis ward. St. Louis has had 157 homicides in 2008, 33 more than last year at this time.

"The community has to be ready to defend itself, because it's clear the economy is going to get worse, and criminals are getting more bold," Troupe, 72, said Tuesday.

Troupe said that when he and residents approached a district police commander last year, they were told "there was nothing he could do to protect us and the community ... that he didn't have the manpower."

Police did not immediately return requests for comment. Chief Dan Isom told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch he understands Troupe's frustration but doesn't support citizens arming themselves.

Carrying guns, he said, is not a "recipe for a less violent community."

I think the Chief gets it as well. More armed citizen lead to less crime, less crime leads to smaller police budgets. Just look at the 'war on drugs," it hasn't kept anyone off drugs but has added vast amounts of $$ to .gov agencies from courts to prisons, it's all about the money.

The part that I liked is when he said "carrying guns is not a recipe for a less violent community". What a lackey! That is the exact type of spin shit that the Brady Bunch uses. No one said "carry" he simply said arm themselves, which as we all know now thanks to the SCOTUS is a constitutional right.

Unfortunately Chief Dunkin Donuts is probably appointed and not elected so he can be easily tossed into the unemployment line.

The Alderman, not the Chief.

While I get the main point, the "war on drugs" has had a substantial effect on drug use. It has limited the amount of drugs coming in (to a respectable degree) and there is no doubt the legal ramifications keep some from using as well as dealing and trafficking. Then there are state sponsored rehabs (that often don't work, but sometimes do as well).

Seems unfair to just dismiss it as a total failure, that's all.

The article is a great one, just sad that so many had to die before someone would say what needs to be said from within.

I just read this on Fox; are any other News Outlets reporting this? I would think CNN/NBC will verbally destroy this guy.
I'm glad he gets it. They should have the Police Chief on TV to tell the people himself that he is unable to protect them.

Not only is he unable to protect them, he wants more of them to voluntarily disarm next Saturday during a gun buy back. They are paying $50 cash, no questions asked, for any pistol or shotgun. If you hand them an "assault weapon" they double the payoff to $100. The police board that decided to spend $57K to do this even admitted that it didn't work the last time they tried this.

So, this one guy may "get it" but unfortunately the other nut-jobs don't.

Carrying guns, he said, is not a "recipe for a less violent community."

So the police will be turning theirs in too?
