View Full Version : Primary Weapons Systems Tactical Compensator Review

I recently had the distinct pleasure to fire a M4 type rifle equipped with the PWS FSC556 Tactical Compensator and PWS piston system. The rifle had a 16” barrel and was tested in semi and full auto I have used different compensators on many weapons systems in the past but in short this is the finest I have yet experienced.

In semi mode the rifle seemed to have little or no (emphasis on NO) muzzle rise. Sight picture at the time the shot broke appeared unmolested after follow through. Bullet impacts could be easily seen on the reduced steel silhouette target placed at approximately 20 yards as well as 100 yards against a dirt backstop. Spotting impacts was made easier due to a Nightforce NXS 1-4X scope that was described by one shooter as “like looking through High Definition TV”. Good glass? You don’t say.

The noise level was increased as was the concussion felt if within 3 feet of the shooter. With appropriate hearing protection I would describe this as noticeable but not enough to keep me from doing my job. Without hearing protection your ears could bleed (maybe, okay, I doubt it). As a side note, I find that a particular 11.5” Bushmaster barrel w/5.5” flash hider I have used, is significantly louder and more obnoxious than the PWS FSC556 and 16” barrel.

At 20 yards several experienced shooters were able to keep 10-15 round (approx) bursts on the steel with no appreciable muzzle climb or drift. 3-5 round bursts were a joy. The rifle was like holding a really loud pressure wash hose that spit empty brass. I tried the rifle in CQ movement going forward, laterally and with a team member on my left shoulder. I also moved in the #2 spot on his shoulder. In the #2 spot could feel concussive force but, with basic ear cup protection, no excessive sound. Again I could do my job without distraction.

I did no firing in low light as I feel the purpose of this compensator is about fast follow up shots, and accurate controlled bursts rather than firing and remaining undetected. I imagine that the flash would be more than wanted for some and no consequence for others, like me.

Firing the PWS equipped rifle on full auto was an eye opener to say the least. I expected the compensator to work well. However I did not expect it to be near as efficient as it turned out to be. The improvement over a basic A2 was astounding. As soon as we were done shooting we unscrewed the A2 on my M&P 15T and replaced it with the FSC 556. There is no looking back from here. If you want or need your rifle to be able to put multiple rounds in a tight little bunch without the muzzle going for a walk or spotting hits on target, then this might be sliced bread for you.
The original claim I heard was 3 round bursts into 5” at 50 yards. While I did not try it I do believe it.

Good Review- Great Product.
I've got one. I like it but I think it's a bit too long. I'll be taking it off my 6920 and putting it on an SPR-esq rifle.

I have that same comp, and am going to try and compare it to a friend's Smith Vortex this weekend. I want to see how much flash reduction there is, comparing the two.

I too have one ..... On a 16" Stag ....I used to have a YHM Phantom Comp/Brake on it. In my hands, with my stance, the rifle sat in place better with the YHM ..... but was louder, with Much more concussion back to my head. The PRI556 is not much louder than a A2, does smooth out the recoil impulse and is a outstanding Flash Hider. The pressure impulse back to my head seems real close to stock. Once this year I shot it in the presents of a Presidents 100, Command Master Sargent and even he smiled a bit (just a little bit) in acceptance.

My 4cents worth.

I got one about a year back. I really liked it. At night it also kept all visible flash out of my sight picture. There was flash, but it was very subdued and not seen when shooting. I was using a 20" rifle and did not notice much if any increased sound from the shooter's position.

Well written review, very nice indeed. I've had an FSC556 sitting on my workbench for several weeks now. After reading your review, I'm definitely going to give it a try. Were your CQ drills done indoors? If not, have you used it indoors?

I've got them on all of my work guns and am very pleased with them.

In night fire, I have not ever noticed flash from behind the gun.

I have used mine in shoot houses and found them no more annoying than an A2.

In tight team drills, others say that they notice a little more blast, but don't describe it as unbearable. I have shot around others when they shoot my gun and at times, depending on positioning, notice a little "push" from the vented gases.

Nice review! I've been wanting to upgrade the A2 flash hider on my M&P15T for a while now, and have been wondering what the absolute best one is for flash suppression only - compensation doesn't matter as much to me, I want as much low-light/night concealability as possible..

great comp. I have 3 and will probably pick up another for my most recent build

Vortex or Blackout FH's are probably the 2 best IMHO.

Could someone compare dimensions with an A2 FH. I'm wondering if it will work with a Gemtec HALO. The rear shoulder looks to be square enough with a peel washer but what is the overall length and diameter.

Anyone try it?

Thanks,

Thanks for the writeup. I plan on trying one out on my next build.

A little clarification.
Molon, the drills were done outside. I have not fired it indoors. At one point during CQ movement, I was in the #2 position and the #1 man was firing the weapon with the PWS Compensator. I could feel the concussion from the round but the noise was neither a distraction or excessivly loud.
Still the best compensator I have tried.
