I want to get my G2L mounted so I can use my carbine in the middle of the night if I would ever need to. The way it is now I might as well defend myself with a baseball bat... I guess I could use a pistol or a shotgun, but I would rather use a rifle. I don't want a rail right now. It is my first black rifle, I just want to go out and shoot it and get good with it. I'll worry about all of the fun accessories later...

I've read all of the threads concerning light mounting without a rail, and this is what I've come up with.

Light mount setup #1:
MI #04 FSB mount (http://www.gandrtactical.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?preadd=action&key=04-MI&reference=/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi%3Fsearch%3Daction%26keywords%3D%26searchstart%3D9%26template%3DPDGCommTemplates/FullNav/SearchResult.html%26category%3DMIND)
VLTOR Scout mount (http://www.gandrtactical.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?preadd=action&key=SM)
Surefire G2LED (http://www.gandrtactical.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?preadd=action&key=G2L)

My question is about mounting the sling, I plan on purchasing a BFG VCAS in the near future. I read that a USGI side sling mount (http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/productdetail.aspx?p=4521&st=usgi%20sling%20mount&s=) will not fit underneath the MI #04. The only other solution I could find was BFG SOC modular band adapter (http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/Blue-Force-SOC-Modular-Front-Band-Adaptor-BLACK-p/blueforce%20soc%20forearms%20black.htm). Has anyone ever used one of these adapters? Do they work good? Also if someone could confirm that a USGI side mount won't fit underneath the MI mount, I would rather use the USGI mount.

I also thought of going with and entirely different setup.

Light mount setup #2:
MI #02 (http://www.gandrtactical.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?preadd=action&key=02-MI&reference=/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi%3Fsearch%3Daction%26keywords%3D%26searchstart%3D9%26template%3DPDGCommTemplates/FullNav/SearchResult.html%26category%3DMIND)
VLTOR Scout offset mount (http://www.gandrtactical.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?preadd=action&key=SM-OCG)
Surefire G2LED

I would bolt the MI #02 onto the top of my M4 handguards through the vent holes and use the offset mount the same way one would use it on a rail. That way if/when I decide to buy a rail I would already be set with a light mount. and I could just use a side sling mount for the time being without any problems. My only concern is how durable this setup will be compared to the FSB mount.

I am leaning toward the first setup, I just need the facts about the sling mounting options.

Thanks in advance!

The light set up should be great. You can use this sling adapter to make it happen: https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=5974

The Blue Force Gear UWL is slick!

Thanks! That is a possibility for sure. I don't know how I overlooked that, they are right next to each other on the Bravo Company website...

I would still like to know what the verdict is on that BFG SOC modular strap thing, if anyone has any experience with them.

i'm in the exact same position. i have a 6920 with the side sling mount. i've considered both mounting options for the G2L and have the same concerns.

i interested to see what the consensus is as well.

I have used tape and rubber bands to temporarily mount the light just to see how and where I want to mount the light. The reason I am leaning toward the FSB mount is because it places the light further forward, it is just more comfortable for me. I actually like how it "looks" better with the light mounted on the handguard, but I have to choose functionality over looks... Someone who grips the handguard tight to the magwell probably prefers the other method.

If you are going to run a Vickers sling I'd go with the UWL and run it near the delta ring. Having the sling and light mounted at the front of the handguard was pretty crowded for me when I tried it.

I'd also suggest you may want to look at the MI#01 versus the #04. The #04 is intended for x200, x300, M3, M6 type lights. For the VLTOR mount I think I'd go with the regular picatinny MI#01, but maybe that's just me.

The MI#02 bolt on rail is a viable option, but on regular carbine length handguards it feels a little crowded to me too, and I prefer the more forward mounting on the FSB. Both mounts are obviously inexpensive and very easy to install.

Good luck in your selection, I think you are on the right track!

I've thought of this as well. I just figured that the #04 has more flat area on the unused portion. As opposed #01 with all of the extra rail grooves that could possibly snag on clothing, foliage, etc. In this thread (http://m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=20201&page=2) Rob_S posted that he has used the #04 with the VLTOR Scout with success. Either one would probably work just fine for me. If I hadn't had seen that picture posted by Rob_S I probably would get the #01.

Thanks for the feedback!

I'm sure both will work fine. And I think that most of the remaining slots will probably be covered suffieciently to negate any snag problems. Rob is running both a VLTOR mount and an X300 if I remember correctly, which is probably why he is using a #04. Again I'm sure either will work fine, I was only thinking that with the setup you mentioned a #01 may give you a more options for mounting where it feels best to you. YMMV. Same price, same quality. Whatever floats your boat. Good luck!

so as i understand it....the FSB mount will not allow me to use the side sling swivel on my 6920. what about using a piece of rail mounted through the holes on top of the handguard and a VTAC mount? i've seen a few pics and it seems there is a bit more room for the side sling swivel when using this setup. can anyone confirm?

thanks
