View Full Version : Potential defect question regarding a new Spikes FN/Barrel

So I decided to bore scope my new Spikes Optimum FN barrel and to my horror discovered missing chrome and rust in spots throughout the barrel. Is this normal? I also just bore scoped my new BCM barrel and while there wasn't any rust, it appeared to also be missing chrome in a few spots. The spikes barrel was the worst offender by far.

Should I return the barrel?

Here is a picture of some of the missing chrome/rust on the Spikes barrel. (https://i.imgur.com/TldjVfm.jpg)

You didn’t say what the MFG said.

You sure that's rust and not bullet jacket fouling?

Did you bother to clean it or just scope it out of the box? I scope all mine prior to installation and every one from FN or DD is filthy.

Here's a factory FN brand new out of the box:

You sure that's rust and not bullet jacket fouling? I am absolutely positive. I copper stripped the bore before I scoped it.

Yes believe me. I was hoping it was some copper fouling. Completely stripped the bore several times prior to bore scoping. There never was any fouling in this barrel to begin with, just machine oil and preservative.

I'm sure they would say, send it in. Although I seriously doubt they have any replacement barrels to send out at this time. I guess I'm going to go ahead and RMA and send it back to the retailer.

OK. I'm an idiot. I went ahead and switched over to barnes copper remover one final time and sure enough it was copper. It's all clean now. Thanks so much for the comparison photo.

The picture you shared looked like normal test firing fouling to me. You may 'think' you cleaned it all out prior to looking with the bore scope but looks to me like you missed a spot.

Would not be returning that or stressing about it if it were my barrel.

Which scope were these taken with?

Group it, then decide. I have barrels ten times uglier under a scope to include a really ugly leade that still shoot MOA.

I have an FN Optimum barrel on my favorite build.

Glad it was just jacket fouling. Cool scope.

Teslong? I think is the name. It's not expensive; the trick is adjusting the head/lens. I've got it at the sweet spot for .224 bore

However, let this thread be a warning, most guys freak out/overreact/misinterpret things they see in the bore scope. I'm guilty of this myself...one time I thought my chrome lining was pitting...it was just carbon fouling. The pic in question:

I've posted on here before that I've scoped FN, Hodge, DD, HK and Bartlein barrels and how fresh/clean the rifling looks is not necessarily an indicator of how the barrel will shoot. That FN above with those striations across the lands and groves is a decent performer compared to some things that look like glass but just phone it in at 2MOA.

It may be the best/worst $75 you ever spend :p

Thanks. And i have seen some threads on TOS with people freaking out. I know some not so great looking barrels can shoot well and shooting it is the best way to see what a barrel can do. I would just like on to have in case i need it. IE if a barrel is shooting bad from the start it may help further diagnose why

I use my Teslong to compare gas port erosion given the documented number of rounds fired. Mostly useless but interesting to compare to used uppers I have bought.

Funny enough a lot of those "defects" like rough spots gets ironed out and "chips" get filled in by jacket material when you just shoot the damn barrel.

Glad to see it's gtg. Though I rarely use my Teslong I do find it be of a very acceptable quality. Especially for the price.

Perhaps I overlooked it. Which copper remover failed to remove the residue?
