I have kids so I'm looking to keep a loaded ar-15 inside a rapid style safe. What have you guys found success with? My current setup is going to get me killed in a home invasion just trying to get in the safe.

The only one I have is a Vaultek. They don't come cheap, but I have no complaints so far, other than having to remember to charge the battery. The fingerprint pad actually does work, which surprised me.

I would go with a simplex lock. Fort Knox makes excellent safes of this type.

1. Get a trigger lock.

2. Put the loaded magazine in the gun and keep the chamber empty.

3. Install the trigger lock on the gun.

4. Keep the key on a chain around your neck.

Problem solved.

A quick access long gun security box is so much easier.

I like this one:

Works great behind a curtain, or on a wall in a closet hidden behind some clothes. Very fast to open.

For an AR like the OP asked about I recommend the SecureIt Fastbox line.

You can set them up flat under your bed, or upright bolted to a wall.

Vaultek had what looks to be the fastest access so long as it works. They have the button you can place anywhere and press to open the door. Is it reliable though?

I want to minimize the amount of work needed to access the defensive item so that when panic kicks in and my hands don't work I can maximize in my opinion the level of success I might have. Plus there is no defence against an ambush other than to be as ready as possible as quickly as possible.

I have one. The electronic lock is garbage. It works correctly about 50% of the time. At half the price, sure. But it’s overpriced Chinesium in my opinion.

I have a secureit agile 52. It's not rapid, it's six digit and a # to access. It's also not deep enough to store an ar-15 loaded securely. I sunk $900 into it with accessories and shipping. It's heavy duty for a cabinet, buy it's ugly and not very functional in the way that it's designed. It's very meh and when you combine that with the fact that it's really expensive for something made completely in China is disappointing even more.

Yea the button works 100%. The fingerprint pad works too, and the combo pad is also very easy to manipulate. The one thing with the fingerprint pad is you have to get your finger on it, which might be hard to do. But with the combo backup and the button if you choose to use it that's not a problem for me. The only thing faster would be RFID, but I wouldn't go that route unless the chip were implanted.

It seems like a good idea, but I don't think they offer this anymore. I have a SentrySafe designed for quick long gun access. It'll hold an AR with red dot and 20-round magazine with room for two more long guns and a shelf for a handgun or other items. It bolts to a corner of a room and is fairly unobtrusive.

The vaultek rs800i isn't in stock anywhere so I went with the hornady rapid safe. We'll see how it compares to the secureit agile 52 I plan on selling.

I still use my secureit fast box 40, but I am sure to keep the key around because of the total turd of a lock on the Secureit. I cannot believe what they charge for Chinesium.

Secureit agile 52

pros
It's light and the cradle grid tech is good.

Cons
I can't fit a loaded ar with a 30 round mag, and it's good at keeping kids out nothing more. I could pop the top of this cabinet with a 12" pry bar in minutes. No joke this is a serious weakness in this locker.

How old are your kids and what level of gun education do they have? Seems you may want to focus on that before anything else.

2 ten year olds and a four year old the ten year olds have been shooting since they where six. The education is on going and they are not curious but I also don't want them to be tempted.
