Despite what Obama says when asked about the NAU in this clip. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbV8duHcXX0&feature=related)

Is the North American Union already in the works? Watch and read the following links and let me know if you think there is a connection or if it's purely coincidence.

Canada (Quebec), United States, and Mexico will never form a union.

There's just too many differences.

A free-trade agreement does not a "union" make.

I cannot see Canada or Mexico subverting their national sovereignty to the United States nor can I imagine the reverse. So for all intents and purposes for governance, there will NEVER be a union let alone a confederation for at least a hundred years. There is some logic however in assuring the industrial mix of capital, cheap labor and raw material. We have capital, Mexico has cheap labor and Canada has plenty of raw material. All in all a a free-trade zone between the three of us is the best way to be able to compete with China and the EU in the coming century.

Free-trade economic zones (by many other names) have been a staple of commerce for centuries. In terms of economic realities, countries all over the world are creating free-trade agreements and zones. The EU and a myriad of other nations are making them hand-over-fist guaranteeing tariff-free trading in that market. Not having these agreements can result in hundreds of percentage points difference in price due to tariffs. They have trade agreements with dozens and dozens of nations. We have trade agreements with less than 10, but out ENTIRE economy is based on the principal of free commerce and has been since before we fell under the British Empire. Since the 18th century, the Royal and especially American Navies were explicitly tasked with/created with the intent of keeping the sea lanes open for free commerce.

Look at it this way...While America may suffer when producing commodities and other goods, when it comes to heavy manufacturing there is no country on this planet that can produce the same quality for a lower price than the U.S. This is our "comparative advantage" and so long as we put tariffs on things like commodities, agricultural products, textiles and other lower-end manufacturing, the more they will put tariffs on equipment like Caterpillar, John Deere, high quality steel etc. The bottom line is that they benefit manufacturers which is why virtually the entire manufacturing industry supports them.

Those that oppose free-trade try to incite fear of a "North American Union" or other nonsense, but it's about the same as the Brady people using school-shootings as an excuse to ban firearms.
