Saw this flick on TV rerun the other day, for the first time in over 20 years. It's going on 40 years old, but still holds up fairly well today. IIRC, the level of violence was shocking for it's day.

The short-barrel Winchester 97 shotgun got a good workout in this movie. I know that the gang got their pilfered M1911's and M1903 Springfields from Army stocks. Were the '97's supposed to be ex-Army weapons also? This was in the pre-"Trench Broom" days evidently, as there weren't any heat shields used.

It is amusing to see all the tricks that new movies are still stealing from "the Wild Bunch"

It's unquestionably an American classic, Peckinpah's masterpiece, and one hell of a good movie. I think it definitely ranks among the top five best Westerns ever made.

There is a military "riot gun" version of the Winchester 97 that lacks the heat shield and bayonet mount found on the later trench guns. This is what they were using.
