This unique upper uses the FOG, or Forward Offset Gas system with Krink style muzzle device. I purchased it new as a complete factory SBR carbine. The actual barrel length is closer to 10.5" rather than 9" as Vltor advertised. Very soft shooting and runs perfectly, very low round count, surely less than 500. I switched the rather rough original carrier for an NP3 Sionics. There is an interesting thread on this system right here.
