View Full Version : Best 9mm ammo for defence?
Right now, I use a 9mm Glock 19. I haven't really given much thought to the type of ammo I use.
I was thinking about getting some Federal LE Hi-Shok 147gr. Hollow Points. I would prefer to practice with the ammo I am going to keep in it; at $280/1k this isn't unreasonable.
Would this be a good choice or should I look for something with +P or +P+?

Try the search - and the ballistics forum. This topic has been covered extensively.

I did... search is coming up with too much and I though the ballistics forum was for posting testing results...

Try the search term "Service Duty Pistol and Self-Defense Loads"

TAP or Winchester Rangers (if you can find them.)
But you may want to try a few different brands to see what you like and your gun likes.
DrGKR may have more info on this in the Terminal Ballistics column.

I use Federal 9 BP. For a time it was rated at the top. It runs 100 % in my Browning, Sig 225 and Para LTC. Also the 124 gr Nyclad is a top performer, but I don't think Federal is making that load anymore. :D
Here is a good article with pics of some of the most common brands of 9mm self defense ammo. Sorry if its a repost......

I'd say pick whatever +p JHP you like best.
That list is quite good, but in 9mm it omits Fed HST 124gr +p. this has been shown in testing to be outstanding; I carry it in my P7M8, which, of course, is the ideal defensive CCW platform in 9mm. IMHO. . .

LMFAO:D
I like Federal 9BPLE in the Glock 19 the short round nose HP doesn't snag on the feed ramp. Speer GD124+P have snagged on the feed ramps of G19 and G26 on my personal guns. This was at the rate of 2 to 3 times per 200 rounds.
