Looking at a $400 repair bill for a new drum to get my 2016 vintage Samsung working again. Are there any brands that last longer than 5 years?

I've got a Maytag that's going on 30 yrs. I have replaced a few things along the way, but never the drum. More like the igniter and solenoids now and again.

Not sure why you would need a new drum. I have a 15 year old Maytag, replaced a few parts but the drum is solid. They are really easy to work on, check out YouTube for appliance repair channels.

I put some money in this same dryer last year to replace a worn drum roller. Not impressed with the Samsung dryer. The felt gasket is shredded. Small clothes and drawstrings constantly getting wedged and destroyed between the drum and body. The new felt gasket from Samsung only comes with a drum attached.

Probably not. Durable goods aren't so durable anymore.

Another non-firearm forum I am on was talking about appliances. Several folks chimed in that their local repair people won't work on Samsung or LG any more due to crappy build quality and lack of parts and support. They see a lot of failing Samsung durable appliances. The US built appliances have a better reputation amongst the repair folks, was the take away. YMMV.

We have circa 2008 LG washer and dryer (electric not gas) and they still are going strong. Something happened in the last 10 years to cheapen the appliances.

So, Maytag in my future?

Recently bought a new LG dryer after consulting Consumer Reports and learning that basically their top 10-15 dryers are all LG. Let me know if you need specific model numbers, etc.

PS. No, I don't work for LG, or Consumer Reports, or anyone for that matter.

My neighbor has had many, many issues with her LG fridge...something like $3000 and it didn't last the first year. To make things worse, LG customer service was extremely difficult to work with for warranty claims. I think she had problems with her washer and dryer, too, possibly Samsung. Again, new appliances that didn't work without issues. She is a single grandma, so she is not hard cycling these trying to keep up a household.

I was all about buying an all in one washer that does the ventless drying cycle after the wash, but some digging revelealed a high failure rate with these machines, and also front load washers to a lesser extent, due to all the pumping they need to do compared to traditional top load washing machines.

My washer and electric dryer are circa 1994, maybe Maytag, or Kenmore, not sure. They came with the house and I haven't needed to do a thing to them in 2+ years I've been using them. I run a gallon of viengar through the washer every spring, just to reduce any scale that forms, and clean the dryer lint screen after every cycle. My plumber told me to hang on to these appliances forever, since they will last. If I want to sell them, he will buy them since he has clients that ask for non-electronic machines and will pay a premium.

Maytags of old, I have a 25 year old one but Maytag is now a part of Whrilpool and I don't know if the quality is still there. Speed Queen has a reputation as good stuff but expensive.

I wouldn't do LG. There's issues getting support. Modern day Maytag is a mixed bag since you could get a Whirlpool, Kenmore or a Maytag and its all the same machine with a different control panel.

If you have the coin Speed Queen is the best. They tout something like a 25 year life expectancy. They aren't very pretty, but are basically laundromat duty style machine.

Speed Queen Commercial dryer. That is all.

ETA: The only appliance company that is NOT emailing me constantly to buy extended warranties. It's a disgrace that just about every other appliance manufacturer is trying to entice you to buy extended warranties from one to five years after the original warranty expires. Kenmore was really good twenty five years ago, but today they rank in the lower third. Spend the coin for a Speed Queen, about $950.

I stand corrected, I quoted the electric version. The gas model DC5003WG goes for $1150-$1250

Maybe 8-9 years ago the wife decided she wanted to replace our 90s era Kenmore w/d with a set of LG so-called 'high efficiency'. No problems. Clothes are clean and the washer spins so crazy fast that clothes come out nearly dry compared to the old Kenmore.

I have had great experiences with LG and the Whirlpool family (including Maytag). I am looking to replace the W/D in one of my rentals, LG is top of the heap with consumer reports in both ratings and durability. Not that that is a guarantee, but it's something. I have had good experiences with Samsung electronics, their small and large appliances have seemed to be a problem for me.

ETA: the speed queens mentioned are well rated by CR as well, no personal experience.

I've had a few problems with my dryer overheating, my bad, it was full of lint.
I went on YouTube and there was someone with an answer, I fixed it at no cost. I'm not saying you'll be so lucky, but you never know.

I got a cheap amana set and going on 6 years no issues.

I think they were 3-$400 each piece.
I went for the stuff the no touch screens and the fewest options.

Kenmore elite front loaders were the worst I've used.

Edit- the amana is $600 now

For political reasons I won’t touch whirlpool, or any of their subsidiaries like kitchenaid or Maytag. They own a congressman. He was my congressman 30 years ago and the turd is still in office. He calls himself a republican but represents the worst of that party and the Democratic Party. He’s a consistent voice for Gun control and a consistent voice for tax breaks on imported goods sold by “American brands.” Fred Upton is totally worthless but he is owned by the company his grandfather started. All whirlpool is anymore is an importer of Chinese manufactured goods. While Samsung, Bosch or Miele may not be any better. At least they don’t own a Congress critter.

I’d look at euro brands like Bosch, Miele or Electrolux.

My understanding is that US appliances from Bosch are made in the US. At least their kitchen appliances. They don't really list washer/dryer for the US except a small compact model of each. We're going Bosch for the kitchen in our house we are finally getting started on.

Wolffie,

We must be neighbors. I understand your concerns over Fred and how whirpool has been gutted. I am following the advice of the thread and seeking a speed queen from Bob Miller here in the land of our former Great Mayor. Stinky Pete.

It sounds like we used to be. I grew up in St Joseph/Benton Harbor, the home of whirlpool and the Uptons. But it’s been ~24 years or so since I fled and about 18 since I left the state. My parents are still there and I do visit often. It still shocks me that, that turd is still in office…. Sounds like you made a wise choice.

It has been a frustrating adventure, in acquiring a new gas dryer. Traveling from store to store seeking a reputable appliance in stock. The reality? Everything is months away on a special order. Especially the gas dryers. No one wants to take my money and truthfully provide a product at a promised and certain date. Plan B was executed. With a screw gun, a universal felt seal that came from Ebay, some youtube videos and 2 little boys who live to reverse engineer things, we went to work. Turns out that the original felt seal fell victim to a seized drum roller that eventually unthreaded itself and fell into the dryer body. I called my appliance guy, couldn't find a Samsung roller in town. But, the LG roller will fit once it is removed from its fine threaded shaft and mounted onto the Samsung coarse threaded shaft. While the adhesive that came with the new seal dried, the boys cleaned all of the lint and other detritus of life from the dyer parts and greased the other roller bearings. So far so good. $80 in a new felt seal that fit as advertised, a LG drum roller, a new exhaust tube that I found in storage, some TLC to prevent a dryer fire, an opportunity to teach my boys, and the POS Samsung dryer is working again. Hopefully it will last 5 more years so that the global economy will be better suited to purchase a new appliance. I also avoided the $400 replacement drum or the $1000 new dryer tariff.

Not sure if this will help you…

I had a gas dryer. Got rid of it, the damn thing terrified me always being worried about fires and what not. Also replaced the tube and belt system 3 times in that damn thing.

I went out and got a Maytag electric, dropped line and hooked it up myself. Couldn’t be happier!
