Private Message/ Folder Delete

Stupid question, trying to delete or clean up my private messages from several months ago, but delete function for indicated messages won’t operate…. Edumacate me, please

So here's what I see. Check the box all the way to the right on which messages you want to delete then about halfway down is a box for selection and the first item when it opens the drop down is delete. This what you're seeing?

I check the box at the left of the message I want to delete,then hit the yellow “x” box at top of page. I don’t get a drop down menu to delete…
