View Full Version : Nitride BCGs with Chrome Question
Dumb questions:
1. Has anyone made a nitrided bolt carrier that was chromed inside?
2. Has anyone made a nitrided gas key that was chromed inside?
3. Has anyone ever offered the above as a regular production item in any manner?
I'm pretty sure the answers are: possibly, possibly, no.
Check with Cryptic Coatings. I thought their nitride BCG has a chromed gas key and carrier interior, but I might be wrong.

Not advertised as such and the pic of the BC does not show chrome. They do use chrome for the PVD and DLC BCs.

Can be done. No idea if all do it or not.

Interesting - that Brownells part number is for a mil-spec phosphate BCG (EDIT TO ADD: in the comments Brownells indicates that the video is wrong, the nitride BCG does not have chrome)

It would be kind'a pointless to chromium plate over a nitrided finish.
It would be like putting latex paint over a nice lacquered finish.

Agreed.
I'm in a discussion with a mod on another site and before I go scorched earth I want to be sure that the likelihood that a major AR manufacturer has ever used a nitrided BCG with chrome is about nil. Honestly at this point I cannot find proof that one was ever even made...

RCA offers nitriding to LMT E carriers, so I assume it's a thing.

Didn't read the comments.:(
They need to pull or tweak some videos. They have another one that has some nugget of wrong info I noticed within the last few months.

I didn't either until I started trying to figure out the part number discrepancy.
I give them a bit of leeway - they have thousands of products they sell and they try to do informative videos. However, one that is wrong being "up" for 5 years or so is a bit silly.
