"Galloway was decorated with a Bronze Star Medal with V in 1998 for rescuing wounded soldiers under fire during the la Drang battle. He is the only civilian awarded a medal of valor by the U.S. Army for actions in combat during the Vietnam War."

Joe Galloway was an integral part of the Vietnam in HD series from the History Channel. Watching and listening to him, in my opinion, was the best part of the show.

I was wondering about that.

Yep, if not for him most people would only know the Oliver Stone version of Vietnam.

He lived a couple hours from me; I did not know that until I read his obit.

He was once of very few journalists to be really objective about the US military in VN: he praised them when they deserved it, damned them when they didn't. He was fair and objective.
