Can the lock on the small j frames be removed?
I know I can just buy a 442 or 642, but there is a local guy selling a 638 NIB for a good price.

Yes, it can be removed fairly easily if you're comfortable taking the weapon apart. You just have to essentially remove the sideplate and then remove the hammer, and that will allow you to get the lock out of there.
