Received this link from the Springfield Armory blog called "The Armory Life". It's a short read describing the action between the U.S.S. Buckley, DE-51 and the U-Boat U-66 in the North Atlantic, May,1944.

"Small arms rarely played a role in the Battle of the Atlantic; most of the time personal weapons remained in the ship’s, or sub’s lockers. But when the destroyer escort USS Buckley (DE-51) met up with the German submarine U-66, the fight started as a modern anti-submarine action and ended up as a gritty close-quarters brawl."

After reading this article, I decided to commandeer a half dozen coffee mugs to be used as the last line of defense in case of a home invasion. Five out of the six are my wife's favorites. I did volunteer one of my own, as a token of good faith. Yes, I do live dangerously in my own home!

Not at all surprising.

If there was one thing topside besides a 1911 and shotgun it were coffee cups.

I bounced many a coffee cup off the rubber hull of an SSN back in the day.

M14’s were typically only broken out for weapons loading or reactor ops pier side and it took an act of God and about six people filling out paper work.

Neat story, thanks for post. That picture of the beefy sailor with the 1911 looks like he would be just as comfortable holding a cutlass.

Have you seen an Antique Military Coffee Cup?
I swear the damn things were white and 3/8ths to a 1/2 inch thick ceramic to keep your Coffee warm. Easily a 1/4 pound.

Neat story, and hardly the only one of its type. It's surprising how frequently ramming and boarding were conducted by vessels during both the Great War and WWII. Hell, HMS Dreadnought's only combat kill was a sub she rammed. And there's a reason why Lanchester SMGs were retained by the Royal Navy; having a bullet hose with a bayonet in case someone screamed "prepare to repel boarders!" seemed like a good idea.

That would be something to see but I sure as hell wouldn't want to do it.
