Recently I found that my BCM 9" .300 Blackout barrel, a 9" fluted version had suddenly lost it's precision or accuracy. I fellow shooter brought over his borescope and we found some unusual looking surface. So pictures in an email to BCM resulted in a request from BCM to get a look at the barrel. Nothing to lose and curious on my part I sent it in to their tech. Upon their inspection they found the chrome to be defective and IMMEDIATELY forwarded me a new barrel.

This was far more than I expected and extremely generous on their part.

Thank you BCM, and please fellow shooter's support quality companies.

I'm glad to hear they replaced it, but they absolutely should have so I wouldn't call it generous. I'm surprised they just sent you a new barrel though as I would've wanted them to install it. Did you ask them to do that?

No need as I have a pretty good track record on assemblies

Kinda seems like that's the bare minimum that would be expected under those circumstances.

When did you purchase that barrel?

What did you expect? They should have sent you a complete upper as a “We are sorry you had to deal with our lack of QC”

Now THAT would be some customer service. Like said above, yea they did bare minimum.

There would be absolutely no reason to do that.

That barrel is CLEAN!!!

It looks like the Chrome is fine, but the underlying bore surface has pits for some reason.

That barrel really is amazingly clean! Makes me wonder if whatever was used to clean it might have caused the chrome to flake though.

My thoughts exactly. I scope all of my barrels and there is nothing I can currently do to get them that clean. There is always some residual copper fouling running around in there.

That's completely unreasonable. Customers like you make life hell for CS reps.

Agreed. Some folks aren't worth having as customers.

Have to be something harsh. There was one of those contract overrun SOCOM M4 barrels that looked like this earlier this year. To me, it looks like the chrome is plating the pitting, but I could be wrong.

You might be right about that. Don't they use some sort of corrosive process to take off some of the barrel surface to make room for the chrome? What makes me think otherwise, however, is that the pits seem to be very sharp edged, indicating that they weren't plated. Also, the cleanliness of the barrel gives me the suspicion that something overly caustic was used in cleaning, possibly corroding/loosening the chrome itself.

ETA: Ammonia based solvents have been known to cause chrome plating to flake. Wouldn't surprise me one bit to find out that the OP used something like Butch's to scrub the bore.

I think the bore would look worse if it was damaged chemically... Again.. just speculation. And I'd think you'd have to be massively negligent to damage barrel chrome like that.

Mark,

What if the prep work before plating interfered with the chrome? Just a guess on my part, but like you said, something had to happen to it.

New replacement barrel surface almost looked lapped...

As to when the previous barrel was purchased... Jan 2017 barrel went tits up after 800 rounds approximately.

That pitting was only on a relatively small amount of the interior of the barrel, in no way uniform over the surface. As to cleaning I'm inclined to soak in Kroil or Hoppe's and rarely feel a need to use a brush .

Very possible. I don't know enough about the process to guess further.

Can you elaborate? I’m very curious how you got it so clean.

Do you swab with Hoppes and let sit over night or do you have a 5 gallon bucket of it?

Soak wet patches until nothing comes out, leave bore as wet as possible with Hoppes or Kroll and repeat. Occasionally use JB bore paste if I suspect deeper fouling. For me once a soaked brush makes a few passes nothing more is accomplished by that method.
