View Full Version : Longest rifle you own
What is the longest barrel rifle you own?
I'm also curious what you all think is the max length a barrel should be before it's weight/length outweigh it's benefits.
My longest and shortest barrel is 16”.
Plain ol Colt 6920 barrel. Plenty good enough for anything I can do with an Aimpoint.
As this is in AR GD, I am assuming you mean AR rifles in 5.56 (?).
My longest AR atm is 16, but I'd like to add an 18 or 20. 20 just for good ole M16 feels, 18 for longer range/precision.
Longest rifle of all types? My Remington 40X. 24 inch barrel chambered in .22-250.
As to your second question, AR specific, I'd say 20 is the max you get any real benefit from in length. Even at that it probably ain't worth the squeeze over an 18. I only have interest in a 20 cause nostalgia (mostly).
ETA: And yeah, I am assuming "rifle" in the most general sense, not breaking down by "carbine, middy, rifle gas" etc.
I also forgot my 26" Eli Whitney in .43 Spanish. But that one is not about it being a shooter, it's just about having a cool old gun. But I have shot it, just cause.
1909 Brazilian 7x57 Mauser @ 28"
If AR, my SP1. 20 inch.
Cheers, Steve
Hava 22” 6.5 CM on an AR10 and a couple 18” on “precision” AR15s.
Most are 16” or 14.5” PW.

I own an 18" 6.5 Creedmoor thats gonna get a new barrel soon in the 16" flavor.
I think barrels only really get too long when you are talking about small frame AR15's. For example I really dont understand the dude that puts a 6-25x55 optic on an AR with a 24" heavy barrel and then he wants to talk to me about the magic of 224V or 6Arc. To me that gun has nothing over a large frame expect recoil impulse. Something I seem to manage just fine with a larger caliber.
The fun news is that my 16" and 18" CM will be almost the same length when done. My 18" had +2" of barrel and then a uarcomp with is a 2.5"+ MD. That means over all my 18" should be 5.5"+ over my bare 16" which will get a 6" can. So over all I am only gaining like 1" of OAL to get a can.
Centerfire - LH Stag 6L 24” heavy SS, that loves 69 SMKs
Black Powdah - Custom 60” barreled, 75-caliber club butt fusil, custom barrel … still only weighs ~8-pounds
In the .556 realm, I've got one with a 20" A1 profile FSB barrel screwed into a flat top upper. Naturally, it has a carry handle rear sight. It might be my longest 5.56 barrel, but with a Magpul fixed rifle stock, it only weighs 7 lbs 13 oz. I've had a large frame 308 with a 20" tube since 2008. It still has a DD Lite rail, that's hardly light. ha ha
My longest bolt gun barrels are 26". One's a 22-250 and the other's a 308 Win.
I used to have a 24 inch bull barreled 260 Remington DPMS LR308. I couldn't get it to match the groups I was getting from my medium-light profiled 308 Win, so I sold it.

Longest barrel is a 28" Encore barrel
Longest barrel on a semi-auto w/ detachable mag my M1a at 22"
Longest AR barrel is my SPR at 18"
ETA:
I assume the OP is referring to an AR so I voted 18".
In 5.56 AR or another similar caliber semi-auto carbine I don't see a point of going over 16", unless you're going for a retro look.
For larger calibers like 6.5 Creed or 7.62x51 I would still prefer 16", but some of those calibers are simply not available in 16" barrels.
If we are talking ARs, I have multiple 20” rifles. Fantastic shooters and better ballistics than the shorties. Downside is maneuverability in close quarters but as outdoor rifles in a rural or ranch setting they are great. Still a very valid option for a citizen who dwells in those sort of environments, in my opinion.
While they are probably not necessarily any more *inherently* accurate than a short gun, when shooting with irons the extra sight radius frequently allows *me* to be more accurate with them.

Hmm I didnt know we we're comparing barrel sizes now, I just picked over 20" because we can't have too much small barrel energy in this forum.
I have half a dozen 20" AR rifles, but I want a 24" Colt Accurized Rifle simply because I don't have one yet.
But for my important "reach out" stuff I have 700s, FN SPR and a few other bolts.

I came across this several years ago. Ballistics by the inch. Unfortunately they stopped at 18” but from following the chart there doesn’t seem there would be much gain after 18” either. http://www.ballisticsbytheinch.com/223rifle.html
Longest non AR would either be my 1917 Eddystone or Browning 338WM bolt gun. I haven’t measured and don’t remember.
Longest AR is 22” 6.5 C AR10.
My longest barrel length for an AR platform is a 20 inch M16A1 upper.
Since I'm not entirely sure what this thread is supposed to be about here are a variety of answers.
The longest non-AR barrel length is Westinghouse M1891 Mosin-Nagant at 31.5"
The longest semi-auto, magazine-fed rifle barrel is 21" on a DSA FAL.
The longest actual AR barrel I have is a 10.5".
we can't have too much small barrel energy in this forum.
It's not the length that matters, it's the width of the projectile.
32.5 inches on a Trapdoor Springfield
20 in Colt for nostalgia
Longest AR - 18" and longest rifle is my CZ 527 Varmint in .223 - 25.6"

-dude buying a Nomad LT w/Keymo for his .300 pistol
I voted 18”, because I have one, but the guns I shoot all the time are 12.5” and 14.5”. Also, because I didn’t know we were counting muzzleloaders. I’m going to need a bigger ruler.

NOPE
Voodoochild
He said "rifle".
Do we need some Gunny Hartman up in here?
Blanks more than likely! ;)
After 3 kids that wouldn't be the worse problem
24" 308 AR-10
24" 6.5CM AR-10
24" 6MM ARC AR-15
20" 5.56 AR-15
I also have a bunch of shorter, much shorter uppers, so, not just the long stuff.
I can't believe I no longer have a 20" A2. I used to be all about the musket with 55gr ball ammo.

Keep it on topic or keep out of the thread.

Shot placement rules all!!
My longest ar is 14.5, my ak is 16 but getting cut soon.
If I get a 6 5 is would be 22-24"

Thats all the rage these days, too.
One 14.5
All others are 8-11
16" Dissy style (iron sight) is my longest AR barrel. But these days nothing over 14.5 interests me very much.

Colt Model 6550K AR-15A2 Government Model
RRA LAR-15 National Match A2
But I have a couple of semi and bolt actions with 22" and 24" barrels.

Oops.......... Can't figure out why I keep double posting.
Longest AR barrel is 20" on my AR15A4 clone. Overall longest rifle barrel is my Rem. 700 308 Win. 26" heavy barrel.
NYH1.
Comment on the Poll itself - should have specified AR perhaps.

Being the forum we're in I thought it was a given that the intent was longest barreled AR.
Such was my poll answer and primary thread reply.
Haven't measured it, by my 26" Shilen barreled Savage barely fits in the safe. Hang the YHM can and its 12" longer.

18" 6.8spc just to see how fast I could push 130gr Berger's.

M14 clones with 22" barrel (then add in FH) and an FAL with a 21" barrel and the Browning "long-style" FH. Muskets they are.
As far as AR's go it's 20".
I have a Gen1 Noveske N6 upper with a 21" SS barrel on an Armalite lower. It is pleasant to shoot, but it's mostly a safe queen.
As far as 5.56s go, my 18" is my absolute favorite AR. I wouldn't bother with a longer barrel in a small frame.

M16 A1 and A2 have a std 20” barrel, that’s the longest I have with several other vintage AR-15s
