A lot of people don’t realize the closet Air Force base is 25 min away from Russia using afterburners in a fighter jet.
Eleison Air Force base near Fairbanks Alaska. By the time Russian aircraft enter US airspace it’s too late to intercept. Back in the 60s and early 70’s we had Nike Anti Aircraft battery’s surrounding Fairbanks and Fort Wainwright and Eleison Air Force Base. Today these sites are just part of history and abandoned buildings landscape.

What's the concern? Russians flying into Alaska, for what purpose? Are there targets in Alaska that would tempt the Russians to enter our airspace?

The Air Base itself is a target.

I suppose so. Seems a bit fool hardy though. What are we thinking...another Pearl Harbor?

Clear Radar station site huge target the only long range radar for Russia and China in Alaska.
Interceptor SAM site at Fort Greeley 70 miles from EAB
And yes FY22 base at EAB and Anchorage
NOAA satellite tracking station outside Fairbanks
Sad thing those Hyper Sonic missles that China and Russia have are too fast for our interceptors.
Quickest way to West Coast by Russian Aircraft is thru Alaska.

As a kid we lived fairly close to a SAC base; B52s with Nuclear capability.
The Air crew living off base in our neighborhood indicated the base was a high value target.
I have no clue what the OPs base capabilities are, but I would presume the Ruskies are quite aware of their proximity.

FY22 and Refueling Aircraft
For Pacific Theater
A few years ago we had Bear fly over and went to West coast before turning back.
But with Satellite yes they know everything.

Point is Russia could strike US even before we can respond. Fly time from Russia to Alaska is so short.

I took the theme of the thread is that we already have US military in close contact with Russia. Also, I’d think our energy infrastructure in Alaska would be a tempting close target.

Parts

Energy in each military base coal fired plant at Fairbanks
One in town for Fairbanks and interior.

The point of this thread is the OP probably just saw Chris Coons interview where he is laying the ground work
with the little people for boots on the ground in Ukraine , yeah sending your sons and daughters to die in a
foreign war w/ Russia, if that happens why should'nt the Russians bomb Alaska, or for that matter anywhere in
the FUSA, WAKE UP !!!!

F22 Raptors from JBER do the vast majority of the intercepts. We have detection that goes far beyond our airspace and they intercepted 60 Russian aircraft in 2020. None of which reached our airspace. I've been up here my entire life and the threat of Russian bombers and missiles has been a fact of life since the 70's. I'm not too worried about it. I can't see Russia even considering attempting to fight a two front war.

Al Qaeda hit us before we could respond on 9/11......
Thousands of illegals from around the world crossing the Texas border ever year....
Die hard socialists are being elected to Congress....
Hackers are shutting down intra-continental fuel pipelines....

None of that is a conventional military attacking our homeland. Big difference.

As far as I can tell the point is there’s a new member who is PID’ing himself as an ignore list member for me.

IMHO this is an attack on the Homeland. Covid & the Manchurian Candidate have damaged our economy and the vast number of illegals will finish it off. Bill Gates is buying up farmland. Food processing facilities are being systematically destroyed. And so it goes...

Not a conventional military from a sovereign country dude. That’s the point.

We are thinking about defense in depth. Think of what would have happened if there was no base at Pearl Harbor, and the attack would have been on home soil.

I was thinking more in the context of a basic sneak attack. Alaska being so close to Russia. But, yeah, I get your point.

I believe we’re being softened up before things go kinetic. PRC plays the long game. I hope I’m wrong.

What about Elmendorf just outside of Anchorage or even the bases at Shemya or King Salmon?

( I know I know King Salmon is pretty much a radar installation)

25 minutes of dumping fuel to get to a chunk of tundra that is nominally Russian isn't the same thing as reaching a target that has any useful tactical or strategic value...

The one thing Russia has shown repeatedly across centuries if history is that their greatest strength is in depth of defense, and willingness to give ground even on home soil if it enables a later victory.

The last time Russia decided to commit any major strategic resources to the pacific to respond... didn't go great.

JBER- Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson is tasked with intercepts of Russian aircraft. It's no accident that we have as much air power as we do in Alaska. As mentioned in my previous post, I have zero concerns (as an Alaskan) with Russia.
