The Colt 6520 is appealing in a KISS sort of way, but the flat top receiver configurations are more desireable. Has anybody taken a 6520 and replaced the A2 receiver, thereby achieving a handy light-barrelled flat top AR? It seems like a straightforward project, or is there something I am missing?

Note, I have ARs with the M4 profile in 16" length, but the magical number of 6920 always brings a two to three hundred dollar bonus or more at the present time. Thanks for any input.

Yes, in fact I did that this week. I replaced the Colt fixed carry handle upper with a Daniel Defense Large pin Flat top upper receiver. Quick job that took no more the 15 minutes.

Yes. Turns a handy, lightweight carbine into an even handier lightweight carbine with more optimal optic mounting.

A converted 6520 with a T1 on it is the cat's meow.

Receiver was a CMT from BCM.

I refer to them as 6520-F.

This gun started life as a 6520

This is what it looks like now

Thanks guys. Those examples are cool... just what I had in mind. I think I'd leave the standard hand guards and just add a Larue BUIS and an Aimpoint. But since my 6920 is already equipped that way, why am I considering another AR? You just never have enough, I guess!

Thanks again.

Did the 6520's start out with the Colt two piece screw type pivot pin? And, if they did did you all drill or have the lower drilled for the detent retained pivot pin that all the other manufacturers use?

My 6520s were all new production and had the standard takedown and pivot pins.

JStor, you'll need to put one of the taller front sight posts in as the 6520 does not have an "F-height" front sight base. You may get lucky, or you may need the post. It sounds stupid, but that's actually the reason I shaved my FSB and put a rail over the top of it with a Troy sight front and rear.

I have more than one Colt 6520 that came with Screw type front take down pins. They are easy enough to convert to push pin.

Confirmed, the front sight post is not "F" marked and is shorter in height. This can be an issue. Changing of the Front Sight post is an easy thing for an armorer to do.

I swapped my mid 90's 6520 over, using a CMT/Stag upper. Also replaced the two position receiver extension with proper mil-spec tube. This makes for a nice light patrol carbine. The barrel configuration makes more sense to me than a M4/6920. I don't think I'll be deploying an M203...
