How necessary is a thread locker on a muzzle device? After torqage is this thing gonna walk itself loose?
Seeing if anyone has actual Intel or is this an unwritten law?

Only use it for suppressor mounts. Even then, rocksett doesn't have much shelf life and doesn't work when it gets old.

After torque and carbon fouling they become pretty hard to remove, so I wouldn't think it's necessary.

When using a suppressor use rocksett. If not using a suppressor, just torque it to spec.

I’ve had a mount walk before. I’m pretty religious about Rocksett. No need to bother with most non-mount devices.

I have used the PA shim system and torqued the MD to 20 ft# without problems. https://precisionarmament.com/accu-washer-muzzle-device-alignment-system/

This is what I use.

degrease threads on barrel and muzzle device if you do use it

The Smith Vortex self-tightens when the gun is fired. A different device poorly designed or executed could self-loosen. Put it on loosely, fire a shot, and see if it is tighter or looser?

And fax machines send poor quality images. But it's no longer the 1990s.

Yeah, but it's the same general satisfaction as slamming a payphone to hang up... except even more pointless.

It's recommended for suppressor mounts. With that said I've never had a mount loosen under fire that was installed without it. Mind you, I'm confident in my gear and the best course of action is to follow the manufacturer's recommendations. Be warned; however, that when applying rocksett make sure the threads of both the barrel and muzzle device are thoroughly degreased (denatured alcohol works great,) and that YOU ONLY USE A SMALL DROP of thread locker. The last muzzle device I took off for a customer in 2018 took soaking in distilled water for 48 hours before it came loose, as he'd used considerably more than a single drop.

Some suppressor manufacturers (YHM comes to mind) indicate no thread locker for their mounts. I've done a fair number (15?) of YHM suppressor mounts and never seen or heard of them loosening.

All of my suppressor mounts get rocksett. If it's not a suppressor mount, I use a crush washer with no thread locker.
