Most people don't know, he was in one of the first US films with ninja in it, "The Killer Elite" (1975) also starring Robert Duvall. Caan was also a long time martial artist who trained with Tak Kubota.

Something like over 40 years. It runs in the family, his son Scott is BJJ Black Belt

That dude was awesome. I loved him in "Thief" and as the grizzled old thug in "The way of the Gun"

RIP

I don't really know anything about the man but I sure enjoyed watching him pretend to be someone else. Enjoyed many of his films.

I enjoyed all of his movies with Rollerball, A Bridge Too Far and The Way of the Gun standing out in my mind. I read that he could have had any part he wanted in A Bridge Too Far but when he read the script of SSGT Eddie Dohun pulling the pistol on the doctor he went for that relatively minor, although memorable, role.

I will always remember him as Sgt. Eddie Dohun in A Bridge Too Far.

Caan was a breath of fresh air in Hollywood. He described himself as “ultra-conservative” and was an unabashed supporter of President Donald Trump.

Thanks for the great memories, Mr. Caan. I will miss you …

Unfortunate passing, enjoyed his films, too bad it wasn't Alec Baldwin.

I enjoyed the fact that he didn't seem to feel the need to be a political activist, Hollywood needs more "pretend" people like that.

Didn't really mean anything by that. I mean that's what actors do when they are working right? I just liked the characters he played and how he played them. That's all.

Actually I was just following up on your idea that, while we might elevate some to celebrity status, these people play "pretend" for a living and the only thing more ridiculous than worshiping them for that is using them as some kind of political authority.

I have similar views regarding professional athletes that play "childrens games" for millions. To me the NFL and NBA are as absurd as professional Hopscotch or the National Hide and Seek championships.

Thief doesn't seem that awesome until you realize that it was the start of movies like HEAT and the Miami VIce TV series.

Also turns out Chuck and Cooper weren't big fans of Mann or Caan, or the idea of training an actor who is going to be the "bad guy." Cooper wanted nothing to do with it but Mann had already paid for training so he passed Caan off to Chuck. Caan would have preferred to have been at a rodeo and would have rather not been there. Chuck concluded Caan had really bad trigger issues that couldn't be improved in a few days so he simply coached him in how to move and present so he looked competent.

Chuck and Cooper were also promised screen credit which never happened.

From 2016: "“I'm an ultra conservative,” he said at Moet & Chandon’s 6th Annual Hollyshorts Film Festival Opening Night Celebration in Los Angeles.

“I'm not a G** damn Hollywood liberal, I'm not,” he said, adding he only watches Fox News.

Guess I was wrong. Buncheong mentioned that as well.

I suppose it's a matter of his political views not being reported by the MSM as much as others.

Many hours of good entertainment. A better Actor than many of his peers.
R.I.P. James Caan
He played “ SONNY Corleone” believably well as a Hot Headed NYC. Italian. Not too shabby for a Jewish guy .
