View Full Version : What is a good .308 semi-rifle to get?

I am contemplating getting a .308. I have a Ar15 Noveske and a Bulgarian Arsenal Ak47. I don't hunt, and would rarely target shoot long distance, so not sure if one is needed even if there was a major shtf scenario. But with the Obama thing, I might want to have one just for funs.

One rifle I seen is this one:

Its a dsarms FAL in 18" barrel? Is there any upgrades I should get such as the stainless steel barrel? And anyone know if blackened stainless is for the outside color?

Again I'm just contemplating. Thanks.

That would be an excellent choice.

I don't think the stainless barrel is needed.

If you want to mount an optic, the DSA mount is a good one to get.

Consider the M1A with an 18.0" barrel (Bush & Scout)... you may also find one of the 18" MK14s appealing.

I have owned FN FAL types and M1a1 types for years. The FN FAL is better for practile use. Easier, to run, load, better saftey location. Buy a DSA gun. Add the cope cover mount and the speed trigger job, it rocks. Then go crazy and add a surplus ZF4 Hendsoldt scope (for and H&K) sans the claw mount and mount the scope on a ARMS inc STANTAG QD mount for cool, retro FN coolness.

I say go with Noveske N6 to add to your AR15. I did!!

This is going to my project for next year as I plan to install a JAE100-G2 stock on it. :) The SOCOM II 16" looks too short, whereas the 22" feels long. The Scout/Bush 18" would be the perfect fit.

FAL. That is what I would recommend.

I think I'm going to go for that FAL, hits the price right and such. Will it be ok to get the 1" extended rubber buttpad? I think I will get that to help with recoil.

Tell us how much you want to spend and what you want to use it for. I prefer a FAL unless it's long range precision work and then I'd recommend a DPMS LR308.

Recoil is very soft with FALs.

I personally like the SOCOM 1. That said, anything mentioned so far would be a good buy.

I was looking to spend around $1600 or less. I called up dsarms, I got my gun club to fax them their FFL license, but they needed them to call them and tell them I can purchase there. Not sure why they need that, they called but got their voicebox and left a message. I will have to call dsarms in the morning again.

I got the order in. The only option I opted for was the extreme duty mount. I will see how the original trigger is. I wanted to keep the price down so I didn't opt for the match grade trigger set.

I like my M1A but I'm very curious about the FNAR. Very good out of the box accuracy for the price.

Stick with the original trigger for reliablity, and just shoot it. They're not match triggers, but then again they usually don't suck, and they get better with use.

Id say either a DSA PAra FAL or an M1A Scout Squad followed by a AR-10

What is a good recommended ammo for this? I usually buy federal, I'm not sure what grain to get for target shooting, and for defense loads. I saw a chart on the web of what load to use for different kinds of game, but not for defense.

http://www.chuckhawks.com/hunting_bullet_guide1.htm

This chart suggests a 200-220 grain for brown bear, but not sure if the FAL can handle that size.

AR 10 ,IF YOU WANT THE MOST ACCURATE OUT OF THE BOX SEMI. DPMS is a cheaper less accurate option with a lesser quality barrel. a Fal is good and reliable but not supper accurate ,a H&K /PTR is a nice rifle too but again not as accurate . if your only getting (1) 7.62x51 semi rifle the AR10 is the way to go .:D

Just make sure that you get an "SA58" with new internals and not an "STG" with the surplus parts as they tend to rust easier. The DSA scope mount is nice. A little frustrating at first to put on, but once it is on it makes life alot easier for trying different optics. You might even consider upgrading to some USA made internals from Falcon Arms. I.E.- springs and bolt carrier. Happy hunting (for a rifle). I think you are heading in the right direction going with an FAL type.

I would definitely suggest the speed trigger. I got it on my OSW and love it. It breaks very clean, and it very smooth. The match trigger has a trigger control, the speed it just adjusted to 4 lbs, stock is 8-12 lbs. It is well worth the $150. Be prepared to wait. I got my last year before everyone panicked, and it took 6 months.

Saiga/Vepr, M1A, or AR in .308.
