View Full Version : Can't find a light solution, need a rail?
I wanted to keep my carbine simple, no add ons except a light. Irons, light and sling that's it. BUT I can not find a bomb proof light mount, for a carbine with handguards only. I am now looking at the DD Omega rail 7. Any opinions.?
I don't have one, but they claim to be tough. http://www.elzetta.com/

Larue offset mount with a Surefire 6P and a vertical foregrip. No wires to deal with. Activate with your thumb.
For no rails,
GG&G SLiC mount
MI Front sight base light mount
Even the old school SureFire lights w/ the barrel or FSB mount work well

Have you checked out THIS THREAD (https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=22625)?
Whole lotta innovative and viable setups, especially those of rob_s.
Put an Elzetta on my M4gery a few weeks back. Seems okay to me thus far. I am definitely into the KISS mode. Would prefer to use a base cap press switch only but am not about to put on a VFG. So for now it's a tape switch.
Surefire M500?

That Surefire M500A looks nice and simple, replacing the stock upper handguard. Who has one of these? Any opinions?
Like the OP, I don't have rails and would like to keep it simple.
The M500A, while definitely simple and of good quality, is not terribly cost effective. IMHO you'd be better served with a DD Omega rail and a Surefire G2 in the mount of your choosing. The M500A can be found for much less than retail, sometimes as low as $300, but the DD and G2 is about the same cost with more flexibility.
got this one on my rifle. works well for what I need it to do. easy install and solid.

Thanks for the advice, I have been looking at the DD Omega 7, I really wanted to keep this rifle "bare bones" but I really feel like I need a light. I guess I'll break down and get the rail. Thanks again.
Not saying you have to have a rail. Follow the link in Failure2Stop's post above and you'll find several non-rail solutions.

If you decide to go the M500A route, let me know. I have one laying around FS.
I use the Elzetta mount, and it has held a Nitrolon securely thru about 800 rounds at the range. At first I thought it might melt - but it's held up fine. It's available with a thumb screw that allows the flashlight to be removed quickly and easily.

Thank you for the link. Lot of interesting set ups. I know that I do not want to mount directly to the handguard, and I'm a little hesitant to mount to the FSB either....may work great, I'm not sure why I'm hesitant but I am, although I may try it and see. Thanks for all the info.

How do you like the Midwest Industries MCTAR-04 mount? Money isn't really an issue, but I want the light to be totally secure on the rifle, I'm looking for the most robust method of mounting it. If that means getting the DD Omega, so be it, however I have no plans for an optic, VFG, laser, etc. Any more info would be appreciated.

FWIW, I just bought a MI MCTAR-04 after reading Rob's posts and really like it. I have a SureFire X300 to mount on it. After playing around with my options I found its the best for me. I have a DD Omega and it was mounted on my Colt 6920, but after deciding I don't care too much for a vertical fore grip the only reason it was mounted on my rifle was for the light. So I picked up the MI mount from Brownells and put my factory handguards back on. I'm really digging this setup now, its alot simplier if all you plan on mounting is a light.
