OK,………… I've read darned near every post on here. Along with every article I can find on the 6.8 SPR and the .458 SOCOM caliber/upper combination. I have 4 ARs and 2 M4orgery SBRs and I am looking into getting a harder hitting addition. I have narrowed it to the above calibers/upper combination.

Opinions please PRO and CON would be appreciated - . I really only need the uppers.

I've got both... They really aren't in the same league though. The .458 is a brute, the 6.8 is a little 7.62 - think of them that way. 6.8 ammo is made be a few people and costs a little more than high-end 5.56 and a little less that mid-grade 7.62. The .458 is super hard to find and when you do the cost is fairly close the $2/round - much less if you reload for it though. The 6.8 will require new mags and the .458 uses standard USGI.

To really decide I think you'd need to spell out your requirements a little more clearly...

Do what I did, buy both, as both are very popular in their respective uses and fields.

after a LONG search I think I am going to go the 6.8 SPC upper route. Now see what upper i want. an REC7 would be nice.

What a Beast. Those heavy slugs must be able to hit at some range. How far can you accurately hit with that? I'd guess 150 to maybe even 200 yds.

Who makes that can? How effective is it? I'm assuming it's not hearing safe, is it?

Soda cans up to 200 yrds is easy but after that it takes a range finder and
a balistic bullet drop chart to make good hits on a 1 gallon bucket LOL

.
SSK made the can and its 16inches long and made for my 510 Whisper.
They say no can is hearing safe but thats opinion, It sounds close to my 510 whisper with sub loads and no my ears dont ring after 100 or so rounds. The action noise is more noise than the shot, I may do a 45/70 in a bolt action with this can and bag the AR 458 and can use.
I like Quiet like bolt action and single shot guns for the large boomer bullets. I must say it does make the 458 nicer to shoot alot more rounds and
the recoil is cut down to 1/2.
The only + I see in the 458 over my 510 Whisper is cheaper bullets.

6.8 is more practical and affordable in my mind. A 10" 6.8 upper by LWRC with an AAC 7.62 can is my dream gun and current project. Hope to have it ready by next years silencer shoot. :)

A 6.8 is about the same as a .270 cal, maybe a littles less. The .458 SOCOM has the characteristics of a .45/70.

pretty much summed it up
I have a 6.8, I consider it a 270 short
I have a 270 and a 308 bolt but the 6.8 gets used more, it's just a lot of fun
and I had a 45/70 guide gun
the 6.8 is what gets taken out for hogs and it kills them or deer every bit as well as the 308 or 270
