I am looking at buying a complete set of tools for building ARs. I was looking at the Real Avid AR-15 Armorer’s Master Kit as well as their AR-15 Armorer’s Master Kit Pro. Does anyone on here have any experience with these tool kits and which one would you guys recommend buying between the two and why?

I am old... Let me tell you one of the many things I have learned in my lifetime. Don't buy kits expecting every tool will be needed. The majority will never be used.

Here's a thread regarding needed tools:

This was in my AR15 Armorer's File. Don't know who to credit:

AR 15 Tool List

6″ flat tip screwdriver or correct allen wrench/hex bit for pistol grip screw

Pivot pin installation tool- Part# 080-216-011WB- Pivot Pin Tool (I made my own from a regular hex headed bolt - wouldn't have bothered if I'd of seen this: https://ar15basics.com/magorui-ar15-rifle-pivot-takedown-pin-detent-and-spring-installation-tool-set-for-gunsmithing/

1/16 flat punch (Starrett is recommended)- 1/16 Punch

BELOW LISTED TOOLS ARE ONLY FOR THOSE WHO ARE BUILDING A RIFLE DURING THE ARMORER COURSE. (With prior approval from instructor).

-Complete set of flat steel punches (Starrett Pin Punch set recommended) 1/16, 5/64, 3/32, 1/8, 5/32

-Complete set of roll pin holders (starter punches)

-Complete set of roll pin punches

-1″ Nylon and Brass Gunsmithing Hammer

-Bolt Catch Pin Punch- http://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-tools-supplies/rifle-tools/bolt-tools/dissassembly-tools/bolt-catch-pin-punch-prod26484.aspx

-Pivot Pin Installation Tool- http://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-tools-supplies/rifle-tools/pin-tools/pivot-pin-detent-installation-tool-prod26488.aspx

Hammer(s) default is probably Brownell's - https://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-tools-supplies/general-gunsmith-tools/hammers/1-nylon-brass-hammer-prod12588.aspx Although Home Depot, Harbor Freight etc. have stuff that will work. I use a light, 4 oz, dead blow hammer, also.

Pin punches in the following sizes: 1/16, 5/64, 3/32, 1/8, 5/32 It is generally easier to buy a set - Starrett is the go to for pin punches (pin punches are the flat ones, which shouldn't be used for roll pins since they can mushroom the head)

Roll Pin Punches and Roll Pin Starter Punches in the following sizes: 3/32, 1/8, 5/32, 5/64

1/8” Trigger guard; bolt catch 3/32; gas tube roll pin 5/64

Bench block (hockey puck)

Brownell's 3/32”Bolt Catch Roll Pin Punch: (you may not need this since it is an Aero upper) https://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-tools-supplies/rifle-tools/bolt-tools/dissassembly-tools/bolt-catch-pin-punch-prod26484.aspx

That List covers pretty much the basic stuff and sizes. You also need:

MAGWELL VISE BLOCKER and UPPER RECEIVER VISE BLOCK: pretty simple, don't pay more than you need to, here's an example: https://www.amazon.com/HCHKMMI-Sports-Enhanced-Smithing-Finished/dp/B0B1D8TB56/ref=sr_1_107?keywords=ar+tool&qid=1662329424&sr=8-107

REACTION ROD - generic term - the affordable plain-jane vanilla version is: https://botach.com/kz-barrel-spline-socket-rod-ar15-m4-upper-receivers/ There are other, more feature laden models available. Search reaction rods on the forum search button.

ARMORERS WRENCH - many choices, here's mine: https://magpul.com/magpul-armorers-wrench-ar15-m4.html?mp_global_color=118

BOLT/EJECTOR TOOL - essentially three choices:

I know that some of these tools are in the Real Avid kits, but so is a lot of other stuff you won't need.

And I've left off things like hex keys, screwdriver bits, etc.
