The Gen 5 Glock in .40 S&W has been out for a while now, but I’ve never shot one. I’d like to hear from anyone who has shot either a G23 or G22 Gen 5, especially if they can compare it to the Gen 3/4 models.

The Gen 5s have a slightly wider slide with more mass that supposedly tames recoil a bit. The G22 is about 3 ounces heavier and the G23 about 2 ounces heavier than their earlier version.

Appreciate any actual hands on experience and impressions. Thanks!

Shooting a 17.5 then the 22.5 there is subjectively little difference in felt recoil.
22.5 is softer shooting than my 22.3
The thicker (heavier) slide on 22 gen 5 is what Glock should have done with 40 from the start, IMO.

Thanks Brother, I appreciate your answering this question on both forums I posted it on.

I’m looking hard at the G23 Gen 5 MOS at this point. I can deal with the recoil but less is definitely worth it. Also thought less recoil may put less stress on the red dot I’ll mount.

Take care,

Buzz

My wife was issued a Glock 23 Gen 5 last year. The department she works PT for had a policy of “You chose the gun you want to carry and buy it out of pocket”. Her Chief came to her last winter with a new in box 23 and said “let’s go, it’s qual day”. I don’t remember how they score their quals but she passed with the highest score out of the department.

I asked how she felt about the switch from her 19 to the 23 and she said there was no real difference in how the gun handled. To note; we supplied her ammunition for duty for her 19, Federal HST 147 grain. She gets issued 180 Grain HST for the .40.

I have yet to shoot it, but it’s gonna happen one of these days.

My view:
gen5 > 2-4
23.5 > 22.5
Want: 23X
If I had to use a 40 again, it would be 23.5

I carried a Gen 3 and later a Gen 4 G22 as a duty gun. Also carried a Gen 3 G23 as a duty gun. The recoil for the G22 was never an issue, nor was it an issue for the G23. Strangely, the G23 and G19 never fit my hands right. I was even issued a Gen 3 G27 at one point as a BUG and found it better than the G23 I was issued.

I personally own a Gen 4 G22, got it before they were even made public. Still has the older "frying pan" finish on the slide. It is a fantastic pistol and I have no issue with it, Same goes with my personal Gen 4 G27.

I don't like the Gen 5 G22, I find the thickened slide is not needed and it causes issues with holsters.

Like the Steyr M40 which was designed from the start as a 40S&W and then adapted to 9mm. Oddly, the Steyr M series is now only available in 9mm.

Got it. Love my 23.4 and suspect I’ll like the 23.5 too. Plan on an MOS model.

100% agree that a G45 size .40 would be a win. For now, I use XGrips on a 23 with 22 mag for close effect.

I have both, and a 19.3 and 23.3. The Gen 5's handle just like the 19.3. The 22.5 has a TLR-8 and Delta Point Pro mounted and is my nightstand firearm. It is really sweet.

I have a Gen 3 G22 ,G22RTF2 ,and a Gen 5 G22 MOS. the Gen 3 G22 was milled for my first RMR pistol. The Gen 5 G22 MOS is one of my softest shooting CCW pistols and I prefer no finger grooves and 165 HST. The RTF2 has always just shot so well that I can't imagine parting with it. I had a Gen 4 G22 and although I liked it and it shot well I had a good friend that needed/wanted more than I did. I have Gen5 MOS G22 , G45 MOS as well as G48 MOS and Gen 2 G17L and G19 and as I stated I prefer the no finger groove models.

I only use .40. I have 20.4, a 22.4, and a 23.5 MOS. All of them have had flat trigger shoes installed, minus connectors and all trigger mating surfaces polished. The 23.5 is the best shooter and I get better groups with it then I do either of the other two. I can't tell if it's front sight being orange or if the gun is legitimately a better shooter. I will tell you this though NO ONE MAKES A HOLSTER FOR IT. Not Odin Holsters, Bravo concealment, Teir 1 or T-rex arms. So if any of you have a good holster maker...not Fobus or Uncle Mikes. Like a legit holster maker, please let me know...

You buy a glock 19 holster. The guns are dimensionally identical.

Not for gen 5, dude.

The Gen 5 Forties are much thicker in the slide, and have ambi slide releases.

This pistol industry is totally fuX0red up right now. You might seek out a local Kydex holster maker and see if he could squeeze one out for your gun. Not sure if it's still the case, but around here, every other half wit was buying Kydex and mashing out holsters hoping to make their fortune in that saturated market.

Oh shit, I never noticed that with the 23. Thanks.

Comp tac does make 23.5 holsters, and my experience with them has been good.

JM Custom Kydex has what you seek. I’ve got one and it fits perfect on a Gen 5 23.

Pretty late to this post but was wondering if the Gen 5 Model 22 have a tendency to malfunction when a light was mounted as earlier Model 22's did? It was a well known issue with the department I served with, saw it quite regularly.

My understanding is that the Gen 4 was mainly about fixing the .40 cal problems. Which makes sense because that’s when they had other problems start with the 9mm…

A combination of people’s expectations that a .40 should be exactly the same size as a 9mm and manufacturers that don’t want to have different strength springs doesn’t help either caliber in the end.

I don’t know if it’s the joke or the punchline but the Gen4 didn’t help much for the 40 and made a huge mess out of the 9mms.

I thought Gen 3 was when the 9mms took a crap...?? I'm still running my Gen 2 40 cal. I had a gen 3 G17 that sucked.

The problems were across the board starting in ‘09 before they started making the Gen4 all they way until ‘18 when they started the 45 and the slide modification to aid in extraction.

The Gen5 brought issues with the triggers that haven’t been resolved. The Performance Trigger is supposed to be the fix, but I am afraid it comes with its own set of issues.

What’s wrong with the Gen 5 trigger?

What’s wrong with the Gen 5 trigger?

They get extremely gritty and heavy. I have had several go bad in under 5K rounds. I am not the only person to have this happen. The two 17s I train with have a combined ~18K rounds. Glock rebuilt one lower twice, one once, and replaced both complete frames once.

The Glock Performance Trigger is supposedly the fix for this issue.
