View Full Version : FN's "FN-15" rifle

This particular rifle was FN's equivalent to the Colt AR-15A4, and was discontinued several years ago. As far as I can tell, Plain-Jane A4-type rifles continue to sell fairly briskly. So was this model not very profitable for FN compared to their other offerings?

I think for that amount of money there are better options

Well, yeah, since this was discontinued years ago.

Seems every time FN gets mentioned there is a dramatic difference between how they build rifles for the military and rifled for the commercial market. Which kind of sucks because when they came out with the semi autos I really wanted one.

I have one. I bought it in 2014 and after replacing the handguards and BCG with Colt I’m very happy with it. The handguards that came with it were the cheap, commercial flavor of A2 handguards. A set of Colt’s fixed that. There was nothing wrong with the BCG per se, but I wasn’t impressed with the gas key staking so I threw in a spare Colt and it’s been a solid rifle. I paid $999 for it back then.

I think what killed this rifle off was the release of the M-16A4 military collector model. After that, I don’t think this one sold all that well.

Is yours an HBAR configuration?

It has an A2 profile barrel.

I wondered about that since FN's product description says "Heavy Barrel, Button-broached, chrome-lined".

They did at one point make an HBAR contour rifle with a Samson rail I believe, but it too has been DC’d

I have always wanted their Military version with KAC H-guards. My LGS had one for $1,400 and it took everything I had to NOT buy it. Great price for a great base AR, but how many AR's does a brother need. Maybe next time.

I won one on GB for $1500. It’s one of my favorite rifles. It needs a G trigger, but other than that I really like it. I added a Comp M4S and found a USMC marked KAC 2-600m rear sight as well as a BFG sling and A2 stock sling adapter.

I think that is going to be my next AR, not alot of options for the 20" a4 classics.

I’d opt for a Colt A4 and dress it up accordingly. I like my FN, but the Colt is the better gun.

do you have a link for the colt? I could not find one. I also prefer colt, but when I got my FN15's, they were cheaper, by alot.

I never saw any 20" ones on colts website.

Thank you, Its tempting me, tho once you add up the rail, covers and a new rear sight. Makes the FN alot easier, and little cheaper.

If I was doing a plain one, I would totally jump on that over the windham I currently have,

Slater

Windham makes a pretty nice Plain-Jane A4, if the one I have is anything to go by. Did you have issues with yours?

I have not had any issues with my windham 20", put about 3500ish rounds thru it.

Good luck finding an M5 RAS. That's all I need to finish mine, but it's a PSA M16A4 marked lower, and the upper has a PSA FN CHF CL A2 profile barrel. I can't justify spending $1700-ish for an FN complete rifle when all I need is a $350+ (especially these days it's more +) RAS to cross the finish line. I even have a TA-31 ACOG for it. But I just can't find the damn RAS anywhere!*

* Gunbroker has one but it is $530 and is "lightly" used with no rail panels or accessories. In a semi-intoxicated moment the other night I almost bought it but the seller only takes USPS MO or certified check.....and then that price! Nah.

not sure where are seeing the FN's for $1700.00, Gun prime has them right now for $1549.00. Thats still cheaper and easier then buying the colt A4 for $999.99 and adding the rail, rail covers and folding rear sight. I don't care about roll marks at this point. only 2 20 inches I have currently is a windham and a super cheap PSA kit on a psa lower.

The FN MSRP is $1839. For a long time it sold for $1699-$1799. Currently, it’s anywhere from $1499-$1599. Some dealers are still asking $1799, but the rifle can be had for around $1500 pretty easily with minimal searching.

Not sure which FN firearm you were looking at on gunprime but the one I'm referring to is https://gunprime.com/products/fn-america-fn-15-m16-military-collectors-edition-556-nato-20-barrel-36320

$1700 (well, $1699 if you want to split hairs).

The Colt AR15A4 is down to $999 at AU, but that doesn't help with the rail...

On a side note, anyone else remember when the KAC M5 rails were selling for $100 or less on ebay? It makes me wish I had bought more. I think I still have two sitting in my "special rails" box along with the RIS II rails and some others.

Whatever you get, TAC had new in wrapper, KAC micro rear sights, USMC marked for $100 a bit ago. I snagged two. They look way better than the Matech IMO and I prefer them functionally.

I almost got one of those once. Local gun store always knocks off the tax if paying in cash and can order darn near anything. (bought an FN upper assembly instead because I wanted a CHF, double chrome lined barrel)

After they tax you and hit you with shipping and then the transfer fee at your dealer - that thing is going to be expensive.

Thoroughbred Armament?

Question for those that may know: does using a KAC micro allow an ACOG to be mounted one more notch rearward than a Matech? Looking to improve eye relief a tad with an ACOG while still having a BUIS mounted.

maybe, some places charge tax, some do not. As for transfer, I would have to pay the 20 bucks for anything shipped, so trasnfer fee does not bother me. And it looks like tombstone does not, so thats a good savings VS 5.5%

These are NOS Surplus and marked P&S so I doubt these are from whatever P&S turned into. TAC is a great company. Buy with confidence. They are one of the best places to get authentic surplus.

Or you could just mount the rear BUIS in front of the ACOG to get the eye relief that you want. It's a backup sight after all. If you manage to break an ACOG, you're probably in a world of hurt anyway.
