This is speculation, but I'm reading some power is already off.
Bang, welcome to the 19th Century.

A communications company said there was a "break" in a vital undersea cable.
It was the second such break in the space of a week, with no immediate explanation.phone-and-internet-connection-after-an-undersea-cable-was-cut

The outage came after an another undersea cable to Shetland, connecting it to the still-more-remote Faroe Island, was also damaged, the BBC reported.

More significant links — like those between the US and mainland Europe — have more than a dozen separate cables, meaning a single break is less likely to result in an outage.

"Engineers are working to divert services via other routes as soon as possible and we'll provide further updates. Our external subsea provider is also looking to restore their link quickly," BT said.

Neither police nor BT gave a reason for the cable breaking.

I made two business trips to the EU this summer, including England.

The hotels in every country had pulled the mini fridges and kept the AC off without explanation.

I knew the reason and it was because they don’t have the energy for such luxuries. You could not get them to admit it regardless of the line of questioning. It was always some mysterious “maintenance issue.”

Either it is purposly being done like the commo link, or they're aging out of their infrastructure.
They should have went heavy in to Nuclear.

Good thing we aren’t on the same stupid path with energy.

I'd be more willing to bet that in the last 50 years they've been spending money on socialist programs rather than maintaining things like their infrastructure and power grid.

I think most countries have done far too much of that shit- ESPECIALLY this one. Gonna bite everyone in ass, very soon I think.

Around here in the US we have a system that supplies power from nearby electrical power plants. The electrical generation plants are integrated together on the grid so that if a plant has a problem and has to drop load we can pick up load from another plant on the system. Even if a power plant has a total shutdown for some reason or another, we can fire up reserve units at other plants if need be to keep up with load demand.

We have never been so stupid as to depend on fuel from another country for our power.

I guess Europe does things differently.

They did this to themselves.

Didn't Biden say something a while back about a 'cold winter'?
Guess he was off by a year...

..by dumb luck, I live in a climate that won't kill you during the winter.

In the summer, I suppose when it's 120F in the shade, if you're in poor shape, it might kill you; but I'm not, and I work in it for 9-12 hours a day and have slept in 105F+ 100% humidity some nights...It was...uncomfortable.

My AC(what most call the light bill) during the winter is $40. During the summer it's $250, to $300. I assume that will double this next year with the rate increases.

I moved to the midwest because it is the most comfortable. You can always grab blankets and I have a really nice fireplace.

If you’re all electric for your utilities (sounds like you are), I don’t think you’ll see it double.

And to put the icing on the cake the Prime Minster quits.

British Prime Minister Liz Truss resigned Thursday after just six weeks in office, following a disastrous and rapidly reversed economic plan that sent the pound plunging and her government into chaos.

Crusading to ‘save the planet’ on a pleasant afternoon or from the comfort of a heated home on a winter day is one thing… shivering in the cold and dark is quite another. It will be interesting to see what attitudes might change in Europe. Even here in California eco-geek politicians altered course when reality smacked ‘em upside the head over power generation capacity. Instead of closing the Diablo Canyon nuke plant as planned, Newsom and crew recently extended operations an additional 5 years including billions in funding.

That's an odd association.

You must think people who care about politics have something in common with people who can't be responsible enough to practice even the most basic forms of birth control. I mean there is literally a pill one can take both to prevent and another after the fact solution.

I think you grossly overestimate the capabilities and levels of responsibility that people who get abortions have at their command.

I'm actually amazed they were willing to correct it and did it. Here in the US we'd have doubled down and given our first female President emergency executive powers to fix the problems she created.

Most of hotels in Europe and the UK have been doing this for years.
Now one of the newer tricks is to limit the range of the a/c down to only allowing an adjustment of a few degrees.
Oct is also the month were they shut of the a/c in most of the hotels. I love it when it is 55F outside but 80F+ in my room and trying to sleep during the day.
