So I just bought a house, and I'm looking to purchase my first gun safe. It's a tri-level home, and space is somewhat limited. I know I want an actual safe, but I don't need or want some 64-gun behemoth (at least not right now).

I really only need something big enough to store a MK18 and a couple handguns (most of what I own can stay at my parents house where they have a larger safe, I just need something to secure my carry/defense firearms). Bedroom space is limited, so I'd want something short enough to fit inside a closet that has shelving. Does such a safe exist? From what I've seen, the smaller gun storage options are mostly cheap cabinets, not actual safes. Not what I'm looking for.

I would look into the concealment items that are on the market now. Shelves, tables, wall hangings, etc. There’s two major downsides to small safes. 1 Burglars can easily carry them off. 2 You’ll inevitably have more guns than it holds which will then have you in the market for another safe.

Get a full size safe.

Fill the bottom of it with cases of ammo. Put SBRs on top of ammo boxes and they will reach the rests.

I agree with SteyrAUG, unless there is a need for it to be hidden or fit into a compact space you will appreciate the full size safe later on. I have a 10 gun Stack-On with just a few rifles in it. I put my SBR (10 3") on top of an ammo can and the others rest on the floor of the safe. I have considered even building a small wooden shelf to create a small compartment at the bottom under the SBR so I could organize some other stuff down there.

I built a shelf for my son's small safe because an AR would not reach the rifle rests. A shelf for an SBR would have useable space under it.

On the other hand, I have Liberty's smallest rifle safe bolted down in the bedroom closet and just set my HD AR inside at an angle. Its the only rifle in the safe, what does it matter if it reaches the rests?

The used market is great for small safes. I paid 1/3 the price of a new safe and I had no issue moving the 250lb safe around, even up 1 flight of stairs.

FWIW, the smallest Liberty Centurion is 60" tall and fits below the shelf in my BR closet.

If you want or need a truly secure gunsafe, its relatively easy to find TL-15 or TL-30 safes that are 40 or so inches tall on the used market (or new). They are HEAVY though. https://www.gunsafes.com/tl-rated-safes.html

Exactly what I did, works great for 5.56 cases on the side for short barreled things.

Just buy a small non-gun safe.

A third alternative... we converted a garage to a room and had floor-to-ceiling cabinetry built in. I had the contractor reinforce one double-door cabinet along with a second steel double-door once you open the first set. From the outside it just looks like a wall of cabinets. When you open one set of doors that's when you see the steel doors with the keypad. It's hidden, immovable and reinforced. Dozens of people have been in this room and no one would ever think to even open the doors much less think there are guns hidden in there.

I fitted the inside with a custom sized steel pegboard from here: https://diamondlifegear.com/pegboard.htm
and organization gear from here: https://rackemdisplays.com/?product_cat=store-fixtures

I originally wanted a fancy purpose built gunwall setup but my solution ended up costing 1/5 of that and is super customizable. I also have electricity in it with automatic door-connected lights.

You could argue that it's not as tough as a purpose built safe, but it is constructed with 1/2 steel plate all around with internal hinges and the concealment factor is a huge deterrent. We are going to re-do our bedroom closets in a few months and will do something similar but smaller for just an SBR.

Other plusses are:
1. It is huge. Much larger than even the largest safe at a much smaller footprint. I can easily fit at least 80 long guns and lots of pistols.
2. The wife is happy not looking at a safe.
3. I feel like a super spy every time I open it up.

Good luck and keep in mind that no matter how big you think you need, you will always need a bigger one eventually...
