View Full Version : Why 10 rounds?
Does anyone know why or how 10 rounds became the magic number that separates “normal” and “high” capacity magazines? I was talking to someone at work about this and neither of us has any idea how that number came about. It seems a little random. I guessed it was linked to the 10/22 rotary mag in the 90’s but it was just a guess.

They’ve gone from 30, 20, to 15 here in Colorado. I think 10 was just a nice number and it also doesn’t affect a lot of single stack guns.
This is how I understand it all
Back when NYPD was transitioning from revolvers to the semi auto's, there was big concern about the number of rounds they would have at their disposal. They were restricted to 10 rounds in the magazine, IIRC, Glock 19's with of course 15 round magazines and the NY+ trigger. Shortly afterwards, the crime bill was being crafted and guess who? Chuck Schumer. So he stated if 10 rounds is good enough for the NYPD, why does everyone else need more? For some time though the NYPD carries at full capacity. Bill Ruger may have had something to do with this in some way, not sure.
10 because less would effect a slew of people who owned magazine fed 22 pistols and rifles and 15 rounds would allow most 9mm and .40 pistols to slide under the bar.

I think it's the lowest 2 digit number. Thus it creates the fantasy of accomplishing something for gun control retards, and also isn't too low that it actually makes shooter start killing these tyrants.
I have always thought it's what most 22lr Simi autos with removable magazines used to hold.

I am going with this.
Because 10 is a nice round number that is smaller than 16 or 18.
The "next" reduction will be down to 6... Then 0. True "compromise".

While I agree with everything said above, it really is Bill's Fault.:bad:

It is twice what someone's grandpa carried in his Colt SAA .44-40, therefore 10 rounds IS high capacity.

Ya boy Biden said last week..paraphrasing.. " I only want eight bullets in a round" . So now were down to eight.
Th TRUTH is..they want down to NONE.

.22s were specifically exempted from most AW bans, especially the Clinton ban.

The only large capacity magazine exemption for rimfires was for tubular mgazines.

No doubt. I remember during the Clinton ban, Butler creek made the 10 round clips that conjoined in some sort of circus fashion (in place of their 25 round banana clips).
Yes. I said "clips".
Limiting the mags to only hold 10 rounds won't stop the school shootings. Didn't Eric Harris have a backpack full of 10 round mags for his HiPoint 9mm carbine in the Columbine school shooting.
If the cops stand outside for over an hour (like they did in Texas) the shooters will have plenty to do all the mag changes they want.
The only ones it limits is the honest person from defending themselves.
You guys are trying to apply logic and reason to a decision in which logic and reason almost certainly played no role.

Show me a gun law that applies logic and reason (other than the 2nd Amendment) and I'll probably die of shock.
