I shot my M&P9 (3rd match with it so far), and didn't do too bad. I did my own trigger job, I'm using a Wolff steel Glock 17 recoil rod and 15lb recoil spring, Dan Burwell rear sight, Speed Shooters Specialty front sight and skateboard tape. I used American Eagle 115gr FMJ. It was a great match and I'd love to shoot it again, I think there's one in the Spring 07.

We shot 7 stages from the Nat'l Steel Challenge, I shot a total score of 142.58
my scores were:

Showdown 18.98, Pendulum 24.12, Accelerator 19.61, Roundabout 17.77, Outer Limits 23.38, Speed Option 23.06, Smoke & Hope 15.66

How do you like your M&P? Looks like a great shooter. I am anxiously awaiting the .45 ACP.

I love it. The M&P to me doesn't feel much different at all than my STI 2011 that I've been shooting in Limited all year. I've handled (not shot) the .45 M&P about a month ago (Ernest Langdons) and it's damn nice. Rumor has it that it will be available in a few months.

Awesome I was 3rd in Production and 12th overall. :D Not too bad for my 3rd match shooting the M&P9. I do need to work on my draw speed, I got spoiled shooting a Race style holster (Ghost holster) w/my STI all year.

I guess they said since I was using the 17 round mag I had to do limited even though it was stock.

It's BS that they made you run Limited just because you had 17 round mags. The guy specifically told me that I could use my 15 rounders, just to load them with 10.

When is the December match?

Robb Jensen
11-27-06, 13:58
There isn't a December match. There should be one in January if it isn't snowing.

mark5pt56
11-27-06, 13:59
No big deal in a sense. I used one mag anyhow for two runs so I could have loaded them to 10 to be in the Production class if I knew.

That's the first IPSC match I've done in about 10 years. I stopped doing them at Dam Neck when people you or anyone never see shoot always won and then the sand baggers on the qualifiers.

This club seems pretty squared away though

I think they have them every third Sunday?

That's right, I forgot them saying that!

I noticed the November scores seem slower in the past as well, I guess the cooler weather and bulky clothing. It all matters some!

Looks nice. I'll have to find a detailed photo of the standard stippling to compare. I can't seem to remember it at the moment.

Here's a pic from Dan Burwells site (www.burwellgunsmithing), I'm planning on sending him my M&P9 Compact for blasting off the melonite of the slide, barrel, take down levers and slide stop and doing the melt job on the slide. I probably have him stipple the front strap and grip insert and mag extension. And whenever Scott Warren (www.warrentactical.com) comes out with his night sights for the M&P I'll get them for this compact. Currently I'm using 2 Burwell M&P rear sights on my fullsize M&P9s, one with a stock front sight and one with a Speed Shooters Specialties fiber optic front sight.

Rob, Did SW go to a drop in extractor on these, or are they still a fitted part like on the older 59/69 series?

I do believe they are drop-in. But Brownells isn't selling the extractor, spring or pin. I'll ask Ernest next time I see him. I've heard they are a bitch to get out. I haven't tried removing one yet.

Mark you should come out to the Fredericksburg USPSA matches. The next one is scheduled for March 2007 and runs through Nov 2007, it's always on the first Sunday of the month. It's $20 and always has at least 7 stages (usually 175-200 rounds or more match) 1 stage is always a classifier which is posted to USPSA.com

So you get a lot of shooting for the money. http://www.vamdsection.org/ IMO it's the best USPSA match in VA by far. If you're going to be shooting Production wear at least 4 mags, some stages are upwards of 40 rounds. Come on up (it's a little far for , make M4arc drive ;) ), you can give me a run for my money, I'll be shooting Production probably all next year.

I normally work on Sunday so that one may be out. I like competitions, but dislike the waiting around. I'll have to check out that other site to see the location, etc. One of these days, I need to do a Glock match, keep saying that! Like Deniro says in Heat- "When I get around to it"

Time is usually a big factor for me. I didn't know about the last one until someone pointed it out to me. I would like to make the next one though!

Hey Rob, just talked to Ralph with the club, a revised score sheet is coming out later. I'm not sure if it's one squad or everyone. I think he mentioned that on one stage the yadded the 5th run?

Dude you finished third in the Limited class shooting a bone stock G17. I'd say that's pretty damn good because the rules are basically stacked against you.

I think Mark was saying he didn't know how the messed up the scores before. From looking at my score sheets it looks like the added all four strings of fire on one stage when they were supposed to only keep the 3 best of the 4 on that stage and the 4 best of 5 on all others.

For January, I'll be there along with the rest of the Team VA Arms (Brett S, Luis G,) and some friends from up here too.

That sounds right Rob, Ralph said what it was and I forget. I might try the next one with the 686, 6 shot. I would like to get in the top 10 with it overall.

It could definately be won with a revolver. You would only have 1 shot left in your gun before a reload if you missed, just don't miss and if you do not more than once per string of fire.

Mark

At Blackwater Steel Challenge everyone is Minor. Their definition of Minor was anything under 140PF.
For USPSA yes, MAJ-165PF, Min-125PF. No one is chrono'd though so it's the honor system.

Limited MAJ .40 or larger and 165PF
Open MAJ .355 or larger and 165PF
Prod Min 9mm or larger and 125PF (all scored as minor)

FYI pretty much all factory 180gr .40 makes Major, and pretty much all 9mm 115gr and 124gr makes Minor. Some 9mm 147gr doesn't make it.

mark5pt56
12-17-06, 12:05
I watched some shooters during the Steel Challenge shoot .40's Handloads and they weren't even close by watching the recoil, I asked the shooter about it and he stated he loaded them real light. I know it used to be 175 PF, the then new .40 crowd whinned because they had to load the rounds "hot" according to them(165's). Couple that with shoddy reloading and a few KB's and IPSC lowered the pf.

For a 147 9mm not making 125 pf is less than 850fps

There was no minimum power factor for the Steel Challenge at Blackwater, but they did want everyone no matter what under 140PF because of the close steel. And yes you can make .40 handloads in 2011s a lot lighter than factory 9mm. My buddies load today was 5.0gr of Titegroup loaded long (I forget how long) pushing a 180gr ZERO JHP at 1000fps which was making 180PF at 1000fps. At 4.8gr he was 165.2PF (almost Minor) at the NC Sectional, so now he has to try 4.9gr. My STI shooting the same 4.8gr load made on the same Dillon press was making 175PF.

Yes USPSA did change the PF about 10yrs ago IIRC. It was do to people blowing guns up which I believe was the biggest reason for making Limited Major .40 cal or larger. People were pushing .38 Supers and 9x19 WAY TOO hard. Honestly I think there should be a different way of measuring power. Maybe having a device that measure how hard a bullet actually hits a target.

mark5pt56
12-18-06, 06:43
I guess I have to shoot .38's then, just when I thought I could burn off the paint with the .357!

Me personally, I think they should go by hits, minimum .380. After all, it did start as defensive shooting. That way it gives the people who want to shoot their carry a shot at doing something other than paper on a static range-not saying it replaces a class, etc.
