Reaping the rewards of years of neglect, all 18 IFV's out of action after only a few days.

In the week beginning 12 December 2022, 18 Puma infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) suffered total failure during training at the Bundeswehr’s range in Bergen. In response, the German Ministry of Defence (MoD) commissioned a comprehensive inventory and failure analysis effort, which has been underway since 16 December. The vehicles in question belonged to a Bundeswehr armoured company scheduled for deployment to the NATO Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF) 2023.

The incident in Bergen was first reported by Der Spiegel, citing an email sent from the commander of the Bundeswehr’s 10th Armoured Division, Major General Ruprecht von Butler, to the Army’s Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Alfons Mais. The email stated that the operational readiness of the 18 Puma IFVs dropped to 0 after just several days on deployment. The failures were primarily attributed to problems with the electronics, but also included a cable fire.

Puma is supposed to be the most electronics-heavy IFV in service today.

A lot to be said for "KISS" Principle.

If you go this route and don't commit to qualified crew, maintainers and spares this is the results you can expect, but a 100% failure rate is bad.

No one wants to do Preventive Maintenance, Command thinks it's unnecessary, because it takes time, the bean Counters don't like it because it costs money and Troops don't like it because they are basically lazy.
So it doesn't get done.
In order to determine the viability of Military Equipment, you have to follow the basic rules of maintenance. If that Unit was doing maintenance and they were a legit 100% when they left the motorpool, then the vehicle is at fault.
But if you didn't follow the book and maintain everything to the very best of your abilities, it failed because you failed.

Wanna bet those Vehicles were reported as 100%?

Apparently, Puma had to frequently stop and reboot the turret electronics for some unknown reason. This may have been corrected as of late.

That certainly doesn't bode well.
