View Full Version : To Re-Contour or Just Replace Colt Barrel?

That's the question?

I have a Colt 20" H-Bar barrel with no flash hider and no bayonet lug.
I want to have a Colt 20" government profile barrel with flash hider and
bayonet lug.

(I'm not concerned about the pros/cons of the bayonet lug, I want one.)

Do I just buy a new barrel assembly to get what I want?
If I can find one?

Or send it off to ADCO to have the barrel re-contoured and a flash hider and a new
front sight base installed?

My big concern with ADCO is the replacement of the front sight base.
Some say they can't be replaced and it's easier to just get a new barrel,
others say it can be done. ADCO advertises that they can do it. I sent
them an E-Mail, but it may be a week before I get an answer.

Has anyone had ADCO replace a front sight base?

Thank You.

Replace the barrel and sell the HBAR to someone that wants it.

It isn't worth you time and money to reprofile.

Removing and reinstalling different FSB ruins the barrel.

How will it ruin the barrel?

Does anyone know exactly how it's done?

Do they weld up the existing barrel cuts and start from scratch
or cut the holes in the new FSB to match the original barrel cuts?

It's starting to look like just buying a new barrel may be the best?

If you want to replace it with a Colt barrel you may have a hard time finding one. If you are just looking for a good quality 20in barrel then take a look at the Saber Defence barrels at Bravo Co.

http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/Sabre-Defence-20-Barrel-Assembly-1-7-p/sabre%20barrel%20asm%2050164.htm

You could then sell the Colt. This is something I’m thinking of doing. I thought about sending mine to ADCO but I would be looking at putting about 200 bucks into a used barrel.

I don't know what barrel you want but here is an upper listed, at least, that might provide a barrel for you:

Thanks for the tip on the upper.

I'm really more interested in the process for replacing the front sight base.
I've read differing opinions about whether or not it can be done?

ADCO can't be contacted right now?

I'm leaning heavily towards just getting a new 20" government profile A2 barrel
instead of modifying the one I have.

Thanks

replace the FSB can be done...it's a real PITA work (belive me, a friend of mine did the job for me) but it's not impossible.
it's not something you can do by yourself at home.

if you were looking just for the FH or the FSB or the barrel profile I'd tell you to send it to ADCO....but since you want all those features at the same time you're better replacing the barrel as already suggested

The FSB is mated to each barrel individually. Redrilling new holes makes the pins not have full contact with the hole wall.

Because of this, they do not hold securely and are easy to push out.

It cannot be done in a factory like way.

I would NEVER run a barrel that had the FSB replaced. I'm not even fond of knocking the pins out of the OEM FSB for any reason. I'm just nutty like that.
