"The object was flying at an altitude of 40,000 feet and posed a reasonable threat to the safety of civilian flight. Out of an abundance of caution, and at the recommendation of the Pentagon, President Biden ordered the military to down the object and they did and it came inside our territorial waters and those waters right now are frozen," Kirby told reporters at the White House briefing.
Fighter aircraft assigned to U.S. Northern Command took down the object "within the last hour," Kirby said around 2:30 p.m. ET.
Kirby made clear the U.S. does not know who owns the object and he would not call it a balloon, like the one allegedly owned by the Chinese government that the U.S. military shot down last weekend.
"We're calling this an object because that's the best description we have right now," Kirby said. "We do not know who owns it, whether it's state-owned or corporate-owned or privately-owned. We just don't know."

This just doesn’t pass the smell test and I agree that it wouldn’t be surprising if the Obama administration (I mean, Biden) realized that they didn’t protect our sovereignty last week, right before saying they would in the SOTU, and so now they needed to show they were serious. Hence, release an “object” into our airspace and then blow it out of the sky to show everyone they mean bidness.

The institution where I work has had the highest percentage of Chinese nationals attending than any other college. We also have a campus in China.

You also have a research laboratory on campus that has a lot of deadly stuff in it that would be very harmful if there was an incident. It’s the only building on campus that had armed security (not the PD) when I was there. I only went inside once for a tour and it didn’t include the heart of the building.

From what I understand, guns were used by the Canadians to shoot down a weather balloon years ago and the dumped over a thousand rounds into it before it came down, not sure if they had to hit it with a missile as well.

Sounds like they need some training... granted, it may take that much to get a catastrophic failure. Just punch enough holes to get it to come down, maybe softly...
Also, a balloon the size of a small car would be able to carry very little, especially with helium... maybe 15 lbs?

Just trying to garner attention. Either, the Chinese have been doing that a while as ignored it or it's new, and we reacted. I think it's clearly the former and note only after someone on the ground saw the first one, does this admin gave a damn. Trump and admin consulted said they were not aware of any balloons, and I tend to believe them, albeit not impossible they were not told either. That seems unlikely to me.

If you start off with the premise that EVERYTHING you hear from the government is part of some psyop, it makes more sense than applying common sense or reason.
We were tracking the large spy balloon the entire time. This was supposed to stay a secret.
It’s not the sensitivity of the radar hardware that was changed. The display is probably filtered to remove clutter, focusing on things moving fast enough to be airplanes or large enough to be a threat rather than a flock of birds or a small, lost meteorological balloon.
If we save the original data then it’s easy to go back in time and filter for the small harmless balloons and blame Trump for it.
Get “tough” and shoot down some harmless weather balloons.
Give a “classified” briefing to congress without any real details to encourage speculation.
Throw in a bit of misdirection with both “I’m not ruling out aliens” and “It’s definitely not aliens” to change the subject from the giant Chinese spy balloon.
If they classify everything as a UFO then it masks their failure to do anything about the giant Chinese spy balloon that we knew about the whole time.
