View Full Version : Scuffing on a recoil buffer; Normal or Abnormal?

I've had the same rifle for over ten years. I have no idea how many rounds I have put through this thing. It's a carbine gas, CMMG with a Carbine weight buffer. I noticed some severe scuffing on the face of the buffer. Is that normal, or, as I have begun to suspect, is my upper potentially out of spec?

Looks like you shoot it…

Try using a heavier buffer and see if it's reduced. Can you tell us anything more about the rifle it's in? Round count? When you first started noticing it? Full auto?

Edit - 17K and Vicious said it better than I could.

Probably just a roughly machined bolt carrier tail. Just lap it yourself with a whetstone and refinish it with some cold blue.

Buffer face chingers are normal. But I'd bump up to an H2. I doubt a CMMG is undergassed. A Carbine weight buffer has no place in a fully gassed gun.

I suspect I have under 7 or 8k rounds on this rifle, a whole mix of anything from Wolf to XM193, all on Semi-Auto. I thought that scuffing was normal about six or seven years ago. I have bumped up to an H1, as I know the gun is a bit over gassed. I have not had the chance to compare the recoil or ejection yet. My PhD is taking a lot of my time right now.
I appreciate the feedback.

H2 is "standard". So going up to that buffer may make you like your carbine even more.

Yeah I was going to say I'd put an H2 in it..

Listen to this advice and add a fresh Colt carbine spring.

Thanks for all of the input. I have a good local vendor/shop that sells good parts. I measured the recoil spring a few weeks ago and it's worn, but still just within spec. It's time.
