Where's a good place to purchase quality extractors?

Not interested in kits just extractors.

Dang. For what those lone extractors cost, you might as well pay a little more and get a complete bolt.

Mil-Spec 4130 extractor $7.19 from Unbranded AR. (https://www.unbrandedar.com/product/ar-15-extractor-billet/)

Not that I would skimp on any part of an AR, but the extractor would definitely be the last. I only source from one place, pay him what he wants and shut up.

I don't consider BCM skimping.

But for all we know Colt, BCM and Unbranded extractors may all be the same.

Agreed. I've never seen a broken extractor personally... even on less than top quality guns. Not that I take any part of the BCG for granted.

The claw is susceptible to wear more so than breakage.

Yes this, or may not be in spec. No disparagement of BCM was intended.

Fwiw, I had the grasping lip (or claw) break off of one a few months ago. An Anderson (cough, cough, imagine that) with only about 5000 rounds on it.....

why does the title have an apostrophe?

most* BCG kits have a usable extractor. Might have to order with bolt gas rings and extractor springs...

It's probably the same reason that your sentence does not start with a capital letter. To my chagrin, people don't seem to be concerned with grammar when posting on discussion forums.

In your experience, have you seen more that lost the complete end, or more that were chipped and just lost an edge or corner?

mark5pt56

Seen both, more so complete loss. I would say that if someone was so concerned with losing an extractor that for piece of mind simply replace it at x interval. Than it's the rabbit hole of what is "x"?

Could just tape one with a spring to your next buffer spring and pop them in at the same time. Still, nothings guaranteed with mechanical stuff.

That was my thought. Change when you hit around 5k on your action spring.

Long ago I found a report from a mil unit that outlined failure rates. It was bracketed and they came up with number based on averages, choosing the lower end. I wish I had saved it as I was never able to locate it again, based on the title and address, I don't think it was supposed to see the light of day.

Oh, and during the baseline reliability* study, the extractor ranked 6th on the list of replaceable items, after such heavy hitters as the barrel, bolt and hammer spring, but ahead of the gas rings and hammer.

* Forty M16s and M4s, some shooting up to 18,000 rounds.

Is the forty M16's, M4's, and 18,000 rounds in reference to the bent ejector?

The bent extractor is from the 1964 initial production quality assurance test of the first production batch of M16s back in 1964.

As to the forty rifles tested, that is from the 2007 "System Assessment Provided as Information for PEO Soldier Baseline Reliability and Dust Assessment for the M4 Carbine, M16 Rifle, and M249 Machine Gun," unfortunately that report is limited distribution, and they'll take away my library card if I give it out.

However, if you request a copy from the US Army Test And Evaluation Command (CSTE-AEC-CCE), 4501 Ford Avenue, Alexandria, VA 22302-1458 and tell them that you want a copy of 16 year old report for historical research, they will probably send you a copy.

That extractor almost looks like it was in a kaboom. Only time I've ever seen one like that was when someone either used pistol powder to load a round, or tried firing one too many 300 Blackout rounds through a 5.56.

Those were the parts replaced in order of frequency in order to get through the 150,000 rounds.

When is buried in the data, and I am not going to dig through it all to find out, but how:

- it breaks in half
- it breaks off the auto seat tab
- the primary sear notch becomes deformed
- the disconnect sear notch becomes deformed

Most of these will be due to metallurgical issues with the casting or heat treating.

I expect to replace gas rings and cam pins, but not hammers. I should rethink that. Any practical way to check for those "metallurgical issues" before it becomes a problem?

5 of those failure items are specifically related to full auto.

This is one of the unfortunate consequences of giving out reliability data . . .

40 weapons, 150,000 rounds of ammunition, at least eight weapons shooting over 18,000 rounds, half of it full auto, and somewhere in all that 4 or 5 hammers break, and of those half of them had an unknown number of round on them before the test started.

The same goes for all the other parts, really. If you plan on shooting twenty-thousand rounds this year through your one-and-only AR-15, keep a spare hammer at home, otherwise don't get all excited about it.

As you spotting trouble, yes, you can x-ray them for casting flaws, do a superficial hardness test to see if the carburization was done right and then cut them in half and do a core hardness test to see of the through hardness id correct. Or, you can do what I do, after a few hundred rounds, give the hammer a close examination, if there is no peening, cracking, or other damage, I don't think about it again.
