View Full Version : Who Remembers Aimpoint Electronic Red Dots...?
First introduced in 1975, pretty sure I didn't get one until 1985 or 1986 for my HK 93. They were pretty terrible and reminded me of the worst .22 rimfire scope you could find.

With attached magnifier, which made things worse.

Some background. I had the Mark III.

Taught me that being on the cutting edge of new, electronic tech was very expensive and wouldn't be practical forever or even very long. Could have been worse, could have bought early Night Vision.

Got to admit this happened before my radar was pinging this sort of stuff. I wasn't into it until I was told I couldn't have it and that was when I knew I needed it. Thanks for sharing.

I was reading SOF and hearing about how amazing they were, how they were gonna render iron sights obsolete, etc.
I had good eye back then and ZERO interest in this type of thing. Mastering Irons was the cool thing to do. I don't really remember seeing them in the gun rags, but I may not have been in a shooting mode in those years.
I wasn't even a glint in my father's eye back in 75, but cool piece of history for sure. Reminds me of some of the early attempts at rifle or sub-gun modularity by taping on big flashlights and other accessories. Sighting systems have come a long ways.

Well, they kinda are. Just more slowly than the 70s gunscribes predicted.

Especially on pistols, it really took a while for that to become practical.

Or, how about an “Armson OEG” on a .223 Galil?
Torso hits at 200 yds were easily accomplished, amazingly enough. Wish I still had the Galil.
I never read about them in a magazine, but the OEG (Occluded Eye Gunsight) was mounted on a few long arms I saw in the early 1980's.

It was also used on the Son Tay raid in 1970.

That was the other choice and I liked them even less and I think they were more expensive.
Speaking of Son Tay raider's use of the OEG sight, here's a good article:

Singlepoint, Armson, Trijicon connections.

Interesting article. I saw the OEG mounted on M-14's and shotguns.

Watching Miami Vice "Hell Hath No Fury..." and the mercenary magazine in the episode showed a CAR-15 with a OEG on it.

Ha. What didn't they use? That was perfect.

I had a working Aimpoint on my custom stock class Carter Machine Buzzard paintball gun. Worked great and was still working when I regretfully sold the gun last year. One of those, you don't want to sell the gun cuz know you will see another one, because it came unique from the factory, but don't use it anymore.
